Willem Claesz Vooght
Willem Claesz Vooght (1572–1630), was a mayor of Haarlem best known today for the portrait painted of him by the painter Frans Hals. Biography He was the son of Claes Aelbertsz Vooght and the brother of Maritge Claesdr Voogt (1577–1644) who married the brewer Pieter Jacobsz Olycan, and Cornelia who married the brewer Nicolaes Woutersz van der Meer. He was himself the brewer at the family Vooght brewery. Frans Hals painted him at the head of the table in his ''The Banquet of the Officers of the St Adrian Militia Company in 1627''. His descendant, the art historian Roeland van Eynden, made a copy of this portrait in 1786 with a memorial plaque in the background that stated that he was mayor and colonel of the Haarlem schutterij, died in 1630, and the portrait was copied from the famous schutterstuk by Frans Hals in the Doelen, Haarlem. Frans Hals the Elder (, , ; – 26 August 1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, chiefly of individual and group portraits and of genre works, who lived and worked in Haarlem. Pieter Jacobsz Olycan
Pieter Jacobsz Olycan (1572 – 1658), was a Dutch brewer, magistrate, and later mayor of Haarlem, best known today for his portraits by Frans Hals, as well as for the portraits of his wife Maritge Claesdr. Voogt. Biography He was a merchant in oils and grains in Amsterdam with a warehouse called "In den Olycan", which became his name. He was also a brewer in Haarlem on the Spaarne river with a large brewery called the "Vogelstruys". Pieter Olycan was one of three brewers from Haarlem who sold his “Vogelstruys” beer from a 'bierstekerij' on the Bierkade in Purmerend. He married Maritje Claesdr Voogt and through her he became the brother-in-law to two more brewers of Haarlem. Nicolaes Woutersz Van Der Meer
Nicolaes Woutersz van der Meer (1575 – 1666) was a Dutch brewer, magistrate and mayor of Haarlem, best known today for his portrait with its pendant of his wife Cornelia Claesdr Voogt, both painted by Frans Hals in 1631. Biography He was born in Haarlem as the son of Wouter Claes Woutersz and Maria Adriaensdr van der Meer. He was first called Nicolaes Woutersz and later added his mother's surname. In 1607 he became a member of the Haarlem regency. In 1619 he became a member of the Admiralty of Amsterdam, and in 1622 he became a representative to the States-General of the Netherlands for Haarlem. Though he is known for his wedding portrait with its pendant, Van der Meer was also portrayed as Captain of the St Jorisschutterij in Hals' ''The Banquet of the Officers of the St George Militia Company in 1616''. ''Banquet of the officers of the Calivermen Civic Guard, Haarlem'' formerly known as ''The Banquet of the Officers of the St Adrian Militia Company in 1627'', refers to a ''schutterstuk'' painted by Frans Hals, in 1627, for the St. Adrian (or St. Hadrian) civic guard of Haarlem. Today it is considered one of the main attractions of the Frans Hals Museum, in Haarlem. Description Unlike other schutterstukken with each sash being the color of the "rot" or civic guard district, in this painting all officers are wearing the colors of the Dutch flag - ''oranje-blanje-bleu''. Roeland Van Eynden
Roeland van Eynden () was a Dutch painter. He was born at Nymegen in 1747, and died at Dordrecht in 1819. Like his brother he devoted but a portion of his time to painting, and is principally known by his works on art and artists, of which the most important is the ''Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche Schilderkunst,'' written in conjunction with Van der Willigen, and published in 1816–1842. Jacobus van Eynden, also known as Jacobus II, the older brother of Roeland, born at Nymegen in 1733, studied art under his father, and painted principally watercolour pictures of flowers, fruit, animals, and views of towns. He, however, devoted a large portion of his time to science. He died at Nymegen in 1824. Haarlem Schutterij
The Haarlem schutterij refers to a collective name for the voluntary civic guard of Haarlem, from medieval times up to the Batavian Revolution in 1794, when the guilds of Haarlem were disbanded. History During the Hook and Cod wars in 1402, Haarlem formed a hand bow schutterij under the patronage of St. George of 120 citizen volunteers to support the local court of Justice. The guild-like group had its own altar in the St. Bavochurch and they even had processions through town on the name day of their saint. The town suffered from uprisings in 1417 and 1422. After another uprising in 1425, a "New" schutterij was formed to educate young men in the use of the crossbow and they defended the city in 1426 against Jacoba of Beieren. The Stadsbibliotheek Haarlem (Haarlem Public Library) is a collective name for all public libraries in the Haarlem area of the Netherlands. The first ''public'' library of Haarlem opened in 1921 at the cloisters of the Haarlem City Hall where the academic library had been since 1821. The move to open its doors to the public with a public reading room was only possible after the previous occupant of the downstairs cloisters, the Frans Hals Museum, moved out in 1913 to its present location.
