Will Lilley
William James Lilley (born 1885, date of death unknown) was a footballer who played as a goalkeeper for both Sheffield United and Rotherham Town in The Football League. Career Born in Staveley in Derbyshire, England he began his career alongside his older brother Harry with local side Staveley Lowgates in 1887 and would go on to follow his sibling from club-to-club until 1894. The pair moved to the town's senior side Staveley with whom Will played for three years, appearing in the Midland Counties League for the club. Harry left for Sheffield United in the summer of 1890 but Will remained at Staveley for a further season. He was eventually transferred in November 1891 and had been intending to join The Wednesday who had offered him a contract, but influenced by his brother he instead opted to join him at their cross-city rivals Sheffield United when the opportunity arose. Staveley is a town and civil parish in the Borough of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Located along the banks of the River Rother, South Yorkshire, River Rother. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Since 2015, it has been known as The Emirates FA Cup after its headline sponsor. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the Women's FA Cup. Charlie Howlett
Charles Howlett (September 1864 – 17 August 1906) was an English footballer who played for Sheffield United as a goalkeeper in The Football League, with whom he made over 100 competitive appearances. Born in Glanford he also had two spells at Gainsborough Trinity. Playing career Howlett started his career in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire but was living in Grenoside near Sheffield when Sheffield United placed adverts in the local press announcing the formation of the club and asking for players. Responding to the appeal he was selected as the side's first goalkeeper and remained with the club for five seasons. He appeared in the club's first ever game against Notts Rangers and in their debut FA Cup campaign which saw both the team's biggest ever victory and heaviest ever defeat in the competition, a 13–0 defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers. Midland Football League (1889)
The Midland Football League was a semi-professional football league in England. It acted as a feeder league to the Football League for many years before merging with the Yorkshire League in 1982 to form the Northern Counties East League. History Founded in 1889, only one year after the Football League, the Midland League was the second league for professional clubs to be formed. Eleven clubs participated in the first season, 1889–90, four of whom (including the first champions, Lincoln City) would go on to achieve Football League status. The eleven founder members came from six counties.
