Will (comics)
Willy Maltaite (; 30 October 1927 – 18 February 2000), better known by the pseudonym Will (), was a Belgian comics creator and comics artist in the Franco-Belgian tradition. In the genre known in Francophone countries as bande dessinée, Will is one of the young cartoonists trained by Jijé, who made them live and work with him in his studio in Waterloo. He is considered one of la Bande des Quatre (''the Gang of 4,'' which also included André Franquin, Morris, and Jijé himself), and a founding member of the Marcinelle school. Work Over a long association with the Franco-Belgian comics magazine ' ('' Spirou'' magazine) starting in 1947, Will created, illustrated and wrote several series, including ''Tif et Tondu'' (as main artist, taking over from creator Fernand Dineur), and '' Isabelle''. ''Benoît Brisefer'' (French language, French for "Benedict Ironbreaker", published as "Benny Breakiron" in English, Dutch language, Dutch: ''Steven Sterk'') is a Franco-Belgian comics, Belgian comic strip created in 1960 by Peyo (best known for the Smurfs) and published by Le Lombard, about a little boy whose peaceful, innocent appearance, charm and good manners covers his possession of superhuman strength. Since Peyo's death it has been continued by other artists and writers. Parts of the series have been published in a number of languages around the world. Stephen Desberg (born 10 September 1954 in Brussels) is a Belgian writer of comics. In 2010, he was the 10th bestselling author of comics in France, with 412,000 copies of all his comics together sold that year. Biography Stephen Desberg was born in Brussels in 1954 as the third child of an American lawyer from Cleveland and a French mother who taught him French at the Sorbonne after the Liberation of Paris. They settled in Brussels when Stephen's father became responsible for the distribution of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films in Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands. ''Le Lombard'', known as ''Les Éditions du Lombard'' until 1989, is a Belgian comic book publisher established in 1946 when ''Tintin'' magazine was launched. Le Lombard is now part of Média-Participations, alongside publishers Dargaud and Dupuis, with each entity maintaining its editorial independence. History Les Éditions du Lombard was established by Raymond Leblanc and his partners in 1946. Wanting to create an illustrated youth magazine, they decided that the already well-known ''Tintin'' would be the perfect hero. Business partner André Sinave went to see Tintin creator Hergé to propose creating the magazine. Hergé, who had worked for ''Le Soir'' during the war, was being prosecuted for having collaborated with the Germans and did not have a publisher at the time. François Walthéry (born 17 January 1946 in Argenteau near Liège) is a Belgian comics artist, best known for his series featuring an adventurous flight attendant, '' Natacha''. Biography Walthéry began his career in 1962 during studies at the Institut Saint-Luc in Liège, when he collaborated with scenario writer Mittéï to create his first comic, ''Pipo''. The following year, Walthéry started working for Peyo, assisting on ''The Smurfs'', '' Johan et Pirlouit'' and ''Benoît Brisefer''. Raymond Macherot (30 March 1924 – 26 September 2008) was a Belgian cartoonist. Although not nearly as famous as fellow Belgian cartoonists such as Hergé or André Franquin, Macherot's work, both as artist and writer, remains highly regarded among critics and collectors.
