Wilkie (electoral District)
Wilkie was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, centered on the town of Wilkie, Saskatchewan. Created as "Tramping Lake" before the 3rd Saskatchewan general election in 1912, this constituency was renamed "Wilkie" in 1917. This riding was arguably one of the most conservative in the province, having only once elected a member of the CCF or NDP – in the CCF's 1944 landslide victory. The district was dissolved before the 23rd Saskatchewan general election in 1995. It is now part of the ridings of Biggar, Cut Knife-Turtleford, and Kindersley. Progressive Party Of Saskatchewan
The Progressive Party of Saskatchewan was a provincial section of the Progressive Party of Canada and was active from the 1920s to the mid-1930s. The Progressives were an agrarian, social democratic political movement. It was originally dedicated to political and economic reform; it also challenged economic policies that favoured the financial and industrial interests in Central Canada over agrarian (and, to some extent, labour) interests. Like its federal counterpart it favoured free trade over protectionism. John Edwin Britton (August 6, 1924 – October 16, 2020) was a Canadian businessman and politician in Saskatchewan. He represented Wilkie from 1986 to 1995 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Progressive Conservative. The Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan is a conservative political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Prior to 1942, it was known as the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan. Members are commonly known as Tories. History Early years, 1905–1934 It was the Saskatchewan successor to the eastern half of the North-West Territories Conservatives. The Conservative Party of Saskatchewan's first leader, Frederick W. A. G. Haultain, was so upset at sections of the federal legislation that created the province relating to immigration, education, and natural resources that he renamed the party the Provincial Rights Party for the 1905 and 1908 general elections. James William Arthur Garner
James William Arthur "Jim" Garner (born August 19, 1944) is a Canadian farmer, rancher and former political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Wilkie from 1978 to 1986 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Progressive Conservative. He was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan, the son of William J. Garner and Lillian Brown, and was educated there. In 1967, he married Marie Angeline Harriet Skeates. Garner was defeated by Linda Clifford when he ran for the Wilkie seat in the Saskatchewan assembly in 1975; he defeated Clifford to win the seat in 1978. Garner served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Highways. Cliff McIsaac
Joseph Clifford (Cliff) McIsaac, (August 30, 1930 – July 25, 2006) was a politician, public servant and veterinarian. John Whitmore Horsman
John Whitmore Horsman (September 24, 1888 – June 10, 1976) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Wilkie from 1948 to 1964 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, the son of D.J. Horsman and Janet Mary Craven, and was educated there. Horsman settled on a homestead in the Unity district in 1907. In 1913, he married Elizabeth Bremner. He served on the municipal council for the rural municipality of Round Valley, serving as secretary-treasurer from 1918 to 1938 and as reeve from 1941 to 1948. The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. Hans Ove Hansen
Hans Ove Hansen (August 14, 1904 – July 3, 1994) was an American-born farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Wilkie from 1944 to 1948 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born in Iowa and, at the age of three, moved to a homestead in Leipzig, Saskatchewan with his parents. He was educated at Concordia College in Edmonton. Hansen attended the founding convention for the CCF in 1933 and later served on its provincial council. Also in 1933, he married Marie Baron. In 1943, he moved from his farm in Reford to the town of Wilkie. John Cunningham Knowles , MBE, ED (October 15, 1894 – August 31, 1977) was a political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Wilkie in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1938 to 1944 as a Liberal. He was born in Severn Bridge, Ontario, the son of Robert Knowles and Mary Elizabeth Cunningham, and educated in Ufford and at Northern Business College in Owen Sound. Knowles served overseas in France and Flanders during World War I. After the war, he came west and settled on a farm in Unity. Knowles was on the municipal council for Unity and served on the board of directors of the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association and of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities.
