Wilkes Transportation Authority
The Wilkes Transportation Authority, or WTA, provides North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro, North Carolina with regularly scheduled service through the two towns. Rural service is also provided anywhere in the county with prior scheduling along with service to certain locations outside of Wilkes County. WTA utilizes a fleet of vans and buses to serve their routes. WTA began operating in 1991 and remains the only public transportation option for the population. Services Regularly scheduled routes are served by vehicles marked "WE Shuttle" along the front while vehicles marked "WTA" along the front are used for rural requests as well as out-of-county requests. All vehicles are marked "WTA" along each side and have a green image of the state on the door with "North Carolina Public Transportation" within it. North Wilkesboro, North Carolina
North Wilkesboro is a town in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States, approximately 80 miles north of Charlotte. The population was 4,131 at the 2020 US Census. North Wilkesboro is the birthplace and original home of Lowe's Home Improvement, which continues to have a major presence in the community. The town is also known as one of the birthplaces of the sport of stock-car racing, and the North Wilkesboro Speedway was the first NASCAR-sanctioned track. Wilkesboro is a town in and the county seat of Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,687 at the 2020 census. The town is located along the south bank of the Yadkin River, directly opposite the town of North Wilkesboro. Wilkesboro is a Small Town Main Street community and has recently revitalized its historic downtown to include the Carolina West Wireless Community Commons, Wilkes Communications Pavilion, Heritage Square and Splash Pad. Wilkes County is a county located in the US state of North Carolina. It is a part of the state's western mountain region. As of the 2020 census the population was 65,969, in 2010 the census listed the population at 69,340. Its county seat is Wilkesboro, and its largest town is North Wilkesboro. History The county was formed from parts of Surry County and Washington District (now Washington County, Tennessee) on April 20, 1778, by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly of 1778.
