Wilhelm Von Diez
Albrecht Christoph Wilhelm von Diez (17 January 1839, Bayreuth – 25 February 1907, Munich) was a German painter and illustrator of the Munich School. Life He attended a trade school in Munich, followed by the Polytechnic School (precursor of the Technische Universität München, University of Technology) from 1853 to 1855 and, from 1855, the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, where he was briefly a student of Karl von Piloty. He didn't stay at the Academy very long, preferring to teach himself draftsmanship and painting. He first became known through the illustrations he drew for the ''Fliegende Blätter'', a weekly satirical magazine. In 1871, he illustrated Friedrich Schiller, Schiller's ''History of the Thirty-Years War''. He later turned to animal, landscape and genre painting. Earlier in 1871, with the support of Wilhelm von Kaulbach, Diez became a teacher at the Academy and was soon elevated to Professor. Max Slevogt
Max Slevogt (8 October 1868 – 20 September 1932) was a German Impressionist painter and illustrator, best known for his landscapes. He was, together with Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann, one of the foremost representatives in Germany of the plein air style. From 1885 to 1889 he studied at the Munich Academy, and his early paintings are dark in tone, exemplifying the prevailing style in Munich. The National Gallery (german: Nationalgalerie) in Berlin, Germany, is a museum for art of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. It is part of the Berlin State Museums. Fritz Mackensen
Fritz Mackensen (born 8 April 1866 in Greene, near Kreiensen, Duchy of Brunswick – 12 May 1953 in Bremen) was a German painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting and Art Nouveau. He was a friend of Otto Modersohn and Hans am Ende, and was one of the co-founders of the artists' colony at Worpswede. From 1933 to 1935 he was head of the ''Nordische Kunsthochschule'' in Bremen (today's University of the Arts Bremen). In 1937 he became a member of the Nazi Party. He was buried in the Worpswede Cemetery. Carl Max Schultheiss
Carl Max Schultheiss (1885 in Nuremberg – 1961 in New York City) was a German graphic designer, active since 1940 in the United States. Carl Max Schultheiss studied at the former Royal School of Applied Arts in Nuremberg and at the Munich Academy under Wilhelm von Diez. Schultheiss married Alice Trier in 1914. He worked mainly as an engraver and book graphic designer, was also involved in the fresco painting. Schultheiss emigrated in May 1939 to the United Kingdom. He came in March 1940 to the United States, where he continued his activities. 1951 he began to experiment with printing in color. Carl Max Schultheiss was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in New York, was awarded with the John Taylor Arms Prize at the 29th Annual Exhibition of the Society of American Etchers. Heinrich Lefler
Heinrich Lefler (7 November 1863, in Vienna – 14 March 1919, in Vienna) was an Austrian painter, graphic artist and stage designer. His father was the painter Franz Lefler. Life and work From 1880 to 1884, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Christian Griepenkerl and, from 1884, at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Nikolaus Gysis and Wilhelm von Diez. In 1891, he became a member of the Society of Austrian Artists and, in 1900, was a founding member of the Hagenbund. From 1900 to 1903, he was an assistant to Anton Brioschi, the head designer at the Vienna State Opera, following which he became a professor at the Academy until 1910. Ludwig Von Löfftz
Ludwig von Löfftz (21 June 1845 – 3 December 1910) was a German genre and landscape painter. Biography He was born at Darmstadt. He was a pupil of August von Kreling and Karl Raupp at Nuremberg, then of Wilhelm von Diez at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, where he became professor in 1879, and of which he was director between 1891 and 1899. His chief importance lay in his influence as a teacher. In 1884 he began teaching Anton Ažbe. Among his students was also Lovis Corinth, and the American Albert Lorey Groll. His works are not numerous, but are of great perfection. A lofty atmosphere pervades his interiors, treated in the spirit of the Flemish masters, while his religious subjects are imbued with deep feeling and solemn grandeur. Great technical skill and masterly treatment of the chiaroscuro produce the most harmonious effects in all of his paintings.
