Wildwood Cemetery (Pennsylvania)
Wildwood Cemetery is a cemetery located in Loyalsock Township, Pennsylvania just north of the city of Williamsport. Wildwood was established in 1863 as the main cemetery for Williamsport and its surrounding communities. With a size of 340 acres it is the largest cemetery by size and grave count in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The cemetery is split in two by Wildwood Boulevard. East Wildwood contains the cemeteries, crematorium, offices, and all of the larger public mausoleum. West Wildwood is where the military memorial and monument are located, as well as the Praying Hands mausoleum. The cemetery has an "escape burial hatch". Thomas Pursell, a local firefighter, wanted a burial arrangement for which he or his family could escape in case they were prematurely buried. The resulting design was heavily documented by media in Williamsport and the surrounding areas. There have been six other such hatched built in surrounding cemeteries based on Pursell's original. Loyalsock Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania
Loyalsock Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 11,561 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the second largest municipality in Lycoming County, in terms of population, behind the county seat, Williamsport. The township was settled in 1768 and incorporated in 1786. It is located on the north bank of the West Branch Susquehanna River. Native American artifacts can be commonly found in parks near the West Branch. Archaeologists have found over 1,500 pieces of Native American pottery, weaponry and other artifacts, some being displayed in collections in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York City. Most can be found at local museums in nearby Williamsport. History Loyalsock Township was formed from Muncy Township in February 1786 by the Northumberland County court. Robert Porter Allen
Robert Porter Allen (24 April 1905 in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania – 28 June 1963) was an American ornithologist and environmentalist. He achieved worldwide attention for his rescue operations of the whooping crane (''Grus Americana'') in the 1940s and 1950s.Allen helped save the roseate spoonbill from extinction. In response to the National Audubon Society's request he moved to Tavernier, Florida, and set up a tent on Bottle Key in the Florida Bay in 1938 so that he could observe the nesting Spoonbills up close. His observations led to the spoonbills' protection from human predation. Conservation Efforts Allen was a pioneer in early field biology and led large conservation efforts around the world to save the whooping crane (''Grus americana''), roseate spoonbill (''Platalea ajaja''), and the flamingo (''Phoenicopterus ruber'').
