Wilders Plads
Wilders Plads is a waterfront area located just north of Wilders Kanal, a branch of Christianshavns Kanal, in the north-western corner of the Christianshavn neighbourhood of Copenhagen, Denmark. The area is bounded by Christianshavn Canal to the east and Krøyers Plads to the north. Andreas Bjørn's shipyard The area now known as Wilders Plads was in the beginning of the 18th century still merely a marshy area north of Christianshavn. In 1735, Andreas Bjørn, obtained permission from King Christian VI to reclaim the area to establish a shipyard in the grounds. It managed to launch 59 ships before his death in 1750, including the naval ship ''Copenhagen Castle'' (''Kjøbenhavns Slot'') with 44 canons. The oldest building in the area is the half-timbered building at Wilders Plads 10 which was built by Andreas Bjørn in 1736 as housing for workers at his shipyard and workshops for sailmakers. Sailmaker
A sailmaker makes and repairs sails for sailboats, kites, hang gliders, wind art, architectural sails, or other structures using sails. A sailmaker typically works on shore in a sail loft; the sail loft has other sailmakers. Large ocean-going sailing ships often had sailmakers in the crew. The sailmaker maintained and repaired sails. This required knowledge of the sailmaker's craft and the tools of the sailmakers loft on shore. Today, one of a sailmaker's important jobs is to teach people how to set and trim their sails to get the most out of them. Burmeister & Wain was a large established Danish shipyard and leading diesel engine producer headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded by two Danes and an Englishman, its earliest roots stretch back to 1846. Over its 150-year history, it grew successfully into a strong company through the end of the 1960s. Royal Greenland Trade Department
The Royal Greenland Trading Department ( da, Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel, KGH) was a Danish state enterprise charged with administering the realm's settlements and trade in Greenland. The company managed the government of Greenland from 1774 to 1908 through its Board of Managers in Copenhagen and a series of Royal Inspectors and Governors in Godthaab and Godhavn on Greenland. Jacob Holm (industrialist)
Jacob Holm (29 September 1770 – 3 August 1845) was a Danish industrialist, ship owner and merchant. He founded the company Jacob Holm & Sønner, which still exists today. Early life Jacob Holm was born at Skafterup in the south of Zealand in 1770 as the youngest of four brothers. He grew up in poverty with his mother, after his father, who was a school master, died when he was just four years old. After serving his apprenticeship in Næstved, he moved to Copenhagen in 1790 where he worked for one of his brothers. Grocer and industrialist In 1794, on Christmas Day, he opened a grocer's store in Torvegade at Christianshavn, servicing the fast-growing population of Amager, and soon also engaged in a profitable trade with the Danish provinces. Johan Christian Conradi
Johan Christian Conradi (1709 – 30 September 1779) was a German born, Danish master builder, contractor and architect. Early life and education Conradi was born at Gotha in the Sazon duchy of Saxe-Gotha. He moved to Denmark in 1739 where he was accepted into the masons' guild in 1740. Work as builder In the beginning of his career, Conradi worked as a mason and builder. His first major work as such was Ledreborg (1743–45). In the late 1740s he began routinely working for Niels Eigtved, architect to the Royal Court, executing projects such as the first Royal Danish Theatre at Kongens Nytorv (1748–49, demolished in 1874), Danish Asia Company's warehouse at Asiatisk Plads (1748–50), Christian's Church (1755-64) and the Lindencrone Mansion in Bredgade (1751). Strandgade ( lit. "Beach Street") is one of the principal streets in the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs along the full length of the neighbourhood, following the harbourfront, from Christian's Church in the south-west to Grønlandske Handels Plads in the north The northern part of the street is a cul-de-sac for motor vehicles while a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists across Trangraven is currently under construction. History Origins Strandgade is one of the streets seen in Johan Semp's plan for Christianshavn from 1617. The original intention was only to build along the south-east side of the street, away from the water, while the beach provided private harbour facilities for the lot owners, who could easily transfer goods from ships to their warehouses and storage cellars. Christian VI Of Denmark
Christian VI (30 November 1699 – 6 August 1746) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1730 to 1746. The eldest surviving son of Frederick IV and Louise of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, he is considered one of Denmark-Norway's more anonymous kings, but he was a skilled politician, best known for his authoritarian regime. He was the first king of the Oldenburg dynasty to refrain from entering in any war. During his reign both compulsory confirmation (1736) and a public, nationwide school system (1739) were introduced.
