Dayak People
The Dayak (; older spelling: Dajak) or Dyak or Dayuh are one of the native groups of Borneo. It is a loose term for over 200 riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic groups, located principally in the central and southern interior of Borneo, each with its own dialect, customs, laws, territory, and culture, although common distinguishing traits are readily identifiable. Dayak languages are categorised as part of the Austronesian languages. The Dayak were animist (Kaharingan and Folk Hindus) in belief; however, since the 19th century there has been mass conversion to Christianity as well as Islam due to the spreading of Abrahamic religions. Etymology It is commonly assumed that the name originates from the Bruneian and Melanau word for “interior people”, without any reference to an exact ethnic group. Oofty Goofty
Leonard "Leon" Borchardt (April 26, 1862 death date unknown), better known as Oofty Goofty, was a German sideshow performer who lived in San Francisco, California in the late 19th century and Houston, Texas in the early 20th century. Early life Goofty was born Leonard Borchardt (sometimes Burkhardt) in Berlin on April 26, 1862. He was Jewish. In 1900, Goofty told a ''Houston Daily Post'' reporter that he came to the U.S. on the SS ''Fresia'' as a stowaway in 1876, was found by the captain and made to work for three crossings to earn his passage, and was finally able to immigrate by 1878. According to Goofty, he drifted from city to city before finding himself penniless in Detroit, Michigan during a snowstorm on January 27, 1883, and enlisted in the United States Army for five years. The Wild Men of Borneo, Waino and Plutanor, were a pair of exceptionally strong dwarfism, dwarf brothers who were most famously associated with P. T. Barnum and his freak show exhibitions. Life Waino and Plutanor were actually Hiram W. and Barney Davis, two Intellectual disability, mentally disabled brothers from Pleasant Township, Knox County, Ohio farm, born in 1825 in England and 1827 in Ohio respectively. The 1850 census for them suggests they were born slightly later in 1829 and 1831. Their parents were David Harrison Davis and Catherine Blydenburgh. After their father's death in 1842, their mother remarried to William Porter. Wild Man From Borneo, sometimes shortened to Wild Man, (1888 – June 1901) was a half-bred Thoroughbred racehorse that won the 1895 Grand National and was third in the 1894 running. Background Wild Man was bred by George Keays at Newton House, Nenagh. His dam, Wild Duck, was a half-Thoroughbred sired by the registered Thoroughbred stallion Sheldrake (seventh in the 1877 St. Leger) out of an unraced half-breed mare. Wild Duck was sold as a four-year-old with the foal Wild Man at foot to J.J Maher. Maher won several steeplechases with Wild Duck, notably the Ward Hunt Cup, before selling her to E. Richardson in 1891, who sold her shortly afterward to a German buyer. Wild Man is Wild Duck's only recorded foal. Maher retained Wild Man until 1893, using him as a hunter initially as a three-year-old and then entering him in steeplechases beginning in April 1892. The Bornean orangutan (''Pongo pygmaeus'') is a species of orangutan endemic to the island of Borneo. Together with the Sumatran orangutan (''Pongo abelii'') and Tapanuli orangutan (''Pongo tapanuliensis''), it belongs to the only genus of great apes native to Asia. Like the other great apes, orangutans are highly intelligent, displaying tool use and distinct cultural patterns in the wild. Orangutans share approximately 97% of their DNA with humans. Also called mias by the local population, the Bornean orangutan is a critically endangered species, with deforestation, palm oil plantations, and hunting posing a serious threat to its continued existence.
