Wild Horse Lake (Oklahoma)
Wild Horse Lake is a playa lake located in Texas County, Oklahoma. The lake is west of Hooker, east of Hough, just south of the Oklahoma-Kansas border, off State Highway 136. The lake was the location of the infamous Hay Meadow Massacre (July 1888) in which one faction in the county seat fight in Stevens County, Kansas, killed four members of the opposing faction. Since the killings took place in what was then No Man's Land No man's land is waste or unowned land or an uninhabited or desolate area that may be under dispute between parties who leave it unoccupied out of fear or uncertainty. Hooker is a city in Texas County, Oklahoma, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,918. It is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Guymon on US Route 54 highway. Toponymy The city name honors local cattle foreman John “Hooker” Threlkeld, who came to the area in 1873. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. The city's motto, referring to the alternative interpretation of its name, is "It's a location, not a vocation". History In 1902, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway laid tracks from Liberal, Kansas southwest through the Hooker area to Texhoma, Texas area. Hough is a small unincorporated rural community in Texas County, Oklahoma, United States, north-northwest of Guymon. The townsite was officially platted on July 20, 1928. State Highway 136 (abbreviated SH-136) is a state highway in Oklahoma. It runs across Texas County in the Oklahoma Panhandle, from the adjoining state of Texas in the south to Kansas in the north. A county seat war is an American phenomenon that occurred mainly in the Old West as it was being settled and county lines determined. The Oklahoma Panhandle (formerly called No Man's Land, the Public Land Strip, the Neutral Strip, or Cimarron Territory) is a salient in the extreme northwestern region of the U.S. state of Oklahoma, consisting of Cimarron County, Texas County and Beaver County, from west to east.
