''Wild by Law: The Rise of Environmentalism and the Creation of the Wilderness Act'' is a 1991 documentary film produced by Lawrence Hott and Diane Garey. It also aired as an episode of PBS' ''American Experience''. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film is about the work of Aldo Leopold, Bob Marshall, founder of The Wilderness Society and Howard Zahniser. The film gives the philosophical and political underpinnings of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Howard Zahniser
Howard Clinton Zahniser (February 25, 1906 – May 5, 1964) was an American environmental activist. For nearly 20 years, he helped lead The Wilderness Society as executive secretary, executive director, and editor of ''The Living Wilderness'', from 1945 to 1964. Zahniser was the primary author of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Early life and education Zahniser was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania, and grew up in nearby Tionesta along the banks of the Allegheny River close to the Allegheny National Forest. He attended college at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in English in 1928. Wilderness Act
The Wilderness Act of 1964 () was written by Howard Zahniser of The Wilderness Society. It created the legal definition of wilderness in the United States, and protected 9.1 million acres (37,000 km²) of federal land. The result of a long effort to protect federal wilderness and to create a formal mechanism for designating wilderness, the Wilderness Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 3, 1964 after over sixty drafts and eight years of work. Bob Marshall (wilderness Activist)
Robert Marshall (January 2, 1901November 11, 1939) was an American forester, writer and wilderness activist who is best remembered as the person who spearheaded the 1935 founding of the Wilderness Society in the United States. Marshall developed a love for the outdoors as a young child. He was an avid hiker and climber who visited the Adirondack Mountains frequently during his youth, ultimately becoming one of the first Adirondack Forty-Sixers. He also traveled to the Brooks Range of the far northern Alaskan wilderness. He wrote numerous articles and books about his travels, including the bestselling 1933 book '' Arctic Village.'' Aldo Leopold (January 11, 1887 – April 21, 1948) was an American writer, philosopher, naturalist, scientist, ecologist, forester, conservationist, and environmentalist.
