The Wilcox County School District is a public school district in Wilcox County, Georgia with its board of education in Abbeville. It serves the communities of Abbeville, Pineview, Pitts and Rochelle. WCS is the largest employer in the county. The district schools are about east of Columbus, Georgia, north of Tallahassee, Florida, and south of Atlanta. Abbeville, Georgia
Abbeville is a city in Wilcox County, Georgia, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 2,685. The city is the county seat of Wilcox County. History Abbeville was founded in 1857 as seat of the newly formed Wilcox County. The town was incorporated in 1883. According to one tradition, the city was named after Abbie McNally, the wife of the original owner of the site, while another tradition states the name is a transfer from Abbeville, South Carolina. The current Wilcox County Courthouse was built in 1903 and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Abbeville was home to the Georgia Normal College and Business Institute. In 1910 Abbeville had a population of 1,201. In 1950 it had a population of 890. Wilcox County is a county located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,255. The county seat is Abbeville. History Wilcox County was formed on December 22, 1857, from parts of Irwin, Pulaski, and Dooly counties. The county was named for General Mark Wilcox, a Georgia state legislator and one of the founders of the Georgia Supreme Court. The first county courthouse was built in 1858; the present courthouse dates from 1903. Pitts is a city in Wilcox County, Georgia, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 252. Geography Pitts is located at (31.945270, -83.540004). History The community which later became Pitts began as a settlement in the area of the home of Lyston Clyde Peebles, Sr., two miles east of the Alapaha River. Brock Owens and Ashley J. Pitts operated the first store there in the mid-1880s. Pitts was called Kings' Crossing at the time. When application was made for a post office, the Postmaster General preferred a shorter name. J.A.
