Wigram Baronets
The Wigram Baronetcy, of Walthamstow House in the County of Essex, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 30 October 1805 for Robert Wigram, a successful shipbuilding merchant and politician, representing Fowey and Wexford Borough in the House of Commons. The second Baronet also represented Wexford Borough in Parliament. He assumed in 1832 by Royal licence the surname of Fitzwygram. The fourth Baronet was a Lieutenant-General in the army and sat as a Conservative Member of Parliament for South Hampshire and Fareham. Sir Joseph Wigram, James Wigram, Joseph Cotton Wigram, Loftus Wigram and George Wigram, younger sons of the first Baronet, all gained distinction. Civil servant and diplomat Ralph Wigram was the grandson of Joseph Cotton Wigram. James Wigram
Sir James Wigram, FRS (1793–1866) was an English barrister, politician and judge. Life He was the third son of Lady Eleanor and Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet, and younger brother name of Sir Robert Fitzwygram, 2nd Baronet in 1832; another brother was Joseph Cotton Wigram. Born at his father's residence, Walthamstow House, Essex, on 5 November 1793, James was educated privately and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1815, gained a fellowship two years later, and proceeded M.A. in 1818. Admitted a student of Lincoln's Inn on 18 June 1813, he was called to the bar there on 18 November 1819. In practice in the Court of Chancery, Wigram built up a career. In Michaelmas vacation 1834 he was made King's Counsel, and, in 1835 became a bencher of Lincoln's Inn. That year he also was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Baron Wigram
Baron Wigram, of Clewer in the County of Berkshire, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1935 for the soldier and court official Sir Clive Wigram, Private Secretary to King George V from 1931 to 1936. He was the grandson of Reverend William Pitt Wigram, ninth and youngest son of Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet, of Walthamstow (see Wigram baronets for earlier history of the family). the title is held by his grandson, a former equerry to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who succeeded in May 2017. The first Baron's great-grandson, Captain Charles Malet of the Coldstream Guards, served as Assistant Equerry to Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Wellington John Fitzwygram, 4th Baronet DL JP (29 August 1823 – 9 December 1904) was a British Army cavalry officer, expert on horses and Conservative politician. Early life Fitzwygram was born on 29 August 1823. He was the third son of Sir Robert Fitzwygram, 2nd Baronet, and his wife Selina Hayes. Sir Robert Fitzwygram, 2nd Baronet, FRS (25 September 1773 – 17 December 1843), born Robert Wigram, was a Director of the Bank of England and a Tory politician. Early life Fitzwygram was the eldest son of Lady Eleanor and Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet, merchant and shipbuilder of Walthamstow. Among his numerous brothers were Joseph Cotton Wigram, Bishop of Rochester, Loftus Wigram, George Wigram, and Octavius Wigram, prominent in the City of London as a member of Lloyd's of London and as Governor of the Royal Exchange Assurance Company. Clive Wigram, 1st Baron Wigram
Clive Wigram, 1st Baron Wigram, (5 July 1873 – 3 September 1960) was a British Indian Army officer and courtier. He was Private Secretary to the Sovereign from 1931 to 1936. Parentage and education Wigram was the son of Herbert Wigram. His grandfather the Reverend William Pitt Wigram was the ninth and youngest son of Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet, who was a prominent merchant. Clive was educated at Winchester College, of which he later became a Fellow. After Winchester, he attended the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Military career After passing out from the Royal Military Academy in 1893, Wigram was commissioned a second lieutenant on 4 October. Wigram served in the Royal Artillery between 1893 and 1897 and in the British Indian Army from 1897. He was promoted to lieutenant on 22 September 1897 (with rank from 4 October 1896). Ralph Wigram
Ralph Follett Wigram CMG (; 23 October 1890 – 31 December 1936) was a British government official in the Foreign Office. He helped raise the alarm about German rearmament under Hitler during the period prior to World War II. In part, he did this by providing intelligence information about German rearmament to Winston Churchill, at a time when Churchill did not hold a position in the government of Stanley Baldwin. Churchill used the information to publicly attack the policies of Baldwin. Churchill's magisterial six-volume history of World War II, ''The Second World War'', described Wigram as a "great unsung hero". The autobiography of Valentine Lawford, who worked under Wigram in the Central Department, describes him variously as "the authentic local deity" and "the departmental volcano." George Wigram
George Vicesimus Wigram (28 March 1805 – 1 February 1879) was an English biblical scholar and theologian. Early life He was the 20th child (hence his middle name) of Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet, a famous and wealthy merchant, and the 14th child of Lady Eleanor Wigram, Robert's 2nd wife (an aunt to Charles Stewart Parnell). His family were all capable and several of his siblings became illustrious in their own field. Sir James Wigram became a judge and Vice-Chancellor; Joseph Cotton Wigram became Bishop of Rochester, Loftus Wigram was a barrister and politician, and Octavius Wigram was prominent as an insurance underwriter in the City of London. Loftus Tottenham Wigram QC (6 November 1803 – 19 September 1889) was a British barrister, businessman and Conservative politician. Life Wigram was a younger son of Lady Eleanor and Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet. His numerous brothers included Sir Robert Fitzwygram, 2nd Baronet (1773–1843), a Director of the Bank of England and a Tory Member of Parliament who changed his name from Wigram to Fitzwygram, Sir James Wigram, a judge, Octavius Wigram, Joseph Cotton Wigram, Bishop of Rochester, and George Wigram. He was a part-owner of Wigram and Green, shipbuilders. In 1850, Wigram was returned to parliament as one of two representatives for Cambridge University, a seat he held until 1859. He was a regular contributor in the House of Commons, speaking 150 times during his nine-year stint in parliament. Joseph Cotton Wigram (26 December 1798 – 6 April 1867) was a British churchman, Archdeacon of Winchester and bishop of Rochester. Life Born at Walthamstow, Wigram was the child of Lady Eleanor and Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet (1744–1830). He was the brother of Sir Robert Fitzwygram, 2nd Baronet, Sir James Wigram, Octavius Wigram, Loftus Wigram, and George Wigram. He was educated by private tutors, and proceeded to Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. as sixth wrangler in 1820, M.A. in 1823, and D.D. in 1860. He was ordained deacon in 1822, and priest in the year following, and in 1827 was appointed assistant preacher at St. James's, Westminster. In the same year he was also chosen secretary of the National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church, a post which he retained until 1839.
