Wigan UTC
University Technical College Wigan (or Wigan UTC) was a university technical college (UTC) sixth form that opened in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England in September 2013. Wigan UTC specialised in process engineering and Environmental technology, environmental technologies, and was located in the historic O & C Rushton Warehouse building in Wigan town centre. Sponsors of the UTC included the University of Central Lancashire and Wigan and Leigh College, Wigan & Leigh College. Wigan UTC had an initial intake of students aged 14 and 16 (academic years 10 and 12) in 2013, however from 2015 the college stopped enrolling under 16's and only offered a sixth form provision. The college closed in July 2019 as a lack of students made it financially unviable. University Technical College
A university technical college (UTC) is a type of specialist secondary school in England that is led by a sponsor university and has close ties to local business and industry. These university and industry partners support the curriculum development of the UTC, can provide professional development opportunities for teachers, and guide suitably qualified students on to industrial apprenticeships or tertiary education. The sponsor university appoints the majority of the UTC's governors and key members of staff. Pupils transfer to a UTC at the age of 14, part-way through their secondary education. The first UTCs were established in 2010. Although there are examples of UTCs achieving the outcomes for which they were intended, such as UTC Reading, they have not all been successful.
