''Widow by Proxy'' is a 1919 American silent romantic comedy film produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is based on a 1913 Broadway play by Catherine Chisholm Cushing that starred May Irwin. Walter Edwards (director)
Walter Edwards (January 8, 1870 – April 12, 1920), was an American director, screenwriter and actor. He directed 46 films during his career. Edwards initially work at the Elitch Theatre was as a director in 1896, but he later returned for multiple seasons as an actor in the summer stock cast. "In 1896, Mrs. Elitch signed J. H. Huntley to direct a resident stock company... After six weeks of melodrama, however, and a few unsatisfactory notices, the organization of the company was changed. Huntley, who was not very popular with audiences or with newspaper reviewers, was replaced by Walter Edwards." On July 12, 1896, Edwards started as director and his first play was J. K. Tillotson's ''A Gilded Crime''. The newspaper review stated: "Walter Edwards' presence has strengthened the company materially..." Nigel Barrie
Nigel Barrie (5 February 1889, in Calcutta, British India – 8 October 1971, in South Africa) was an Indian-born British actor. Biography Barrie's background as a dancer and actor on legitimate stages and in vaudeville in both Great Britain and the United States paved the way to early success in silent films. He made screen debut in the 1916 adventure film serial '' Beatrice Fairfax''. After playing Marguerite Clark's love interest in the 1917 Babs series, Barrie settled into a long career as a handsome supporting player, sometimes cast as villains with roles varying from boxer to romantic interests. Increasingly dignified in appearance with his natural build and good looks, the 6' 1" actor later played Captain Halliwell in '' The Little Minister'' (1921) and was Richard Barthelmess' formidable rival in ''The Amateur Gentleman'' (1926). Rosita Marstini (September 19, 1887 – April 24, 1948) was a French dancer, stage personality, and silent and sound film actress from Nancy, France. Early life Rosita Marstini was born on September 19, 1887, in Nancy, France. She married Belgian actor and director Paul Sablon (1888-1940) before she came with him to the United States in 1913. Theatrical work in California She began making movies for Universal Pictures in 1913 with her first feature being Herbert Blaché's ''A Prisoner in the Harem'', sharing the limelight with her husband (known in the United States as Paul Bourgeois). She was known as Countess Rosita Marstini. In 1916, she debuted at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, California in ''Woman's Wits'', a play by Will Wyatt.
