Wicklow Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Wicklow Intermediate Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Lightning Protection Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Wicklow IHC) is an annual club hurling competition organised by the Wicklow County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by intermediate-ranked clubs in the county of Wicklow in Ireland, deciding the competition winners through a group and knockout format. It is the second tier overall in the entire Wicklow hurling championship system. In its current format, the Wicklow Intermediate Hurling Championship begins with a group stage. The nine participating teams are divided into two groups and play each other in a round-robin system. The top two teams in each group proceed to the knockout phase that culminates with the final match at Echelon Park. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Bray ( ) is a coastal town in north County Wicklow, Ireland. It is situated about south of Dublin city centre on the east coast. Kiltegan GAA Club (official title "Naomh Teagáin GAA club") is a GAA club located in Kiltegan, Co. Wicklow. The club was founded in 1964, and its catchment area covers the villages of Kiltegan, Rathdangan, and surrounding areas. The club is represented in youth competitions by the juvenile club Michael Dwyers which is a combination of the GAA clubs in Kiltegan, Ballymanus and Knockananna. History Kiltegan won its first Wicklow SFC title in 1986 and followed this up by winning its first Wicklow SHC title in 1987. Pearse Park or Pearse's Park, () is an GAA stadium in Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland. It is the home of the Wicklow hurling and camogie teams. The ground has a capacity of about 5,000. History Pearse name and redevelopment The ground is named after both the Pearse brothers executed in 1916; Patrick Pearse and Willie Pearse. It is believed that the ground was redeveloped around 1965. Former use Before the ground was redeveloped it was a greyhound racing track known as the Arklow Greyhound Track. The track raced under Irish Coursing Club rules and opened on 30 July 1949 but the Arklow Greyhound Racing Company was fined in 1949 for failing to stamp admission tickets and failure to produce a register. In 1951 landlord William Smyth sued the company for £375 unpaid rent & £1,300 under a covenant of the lease. Kilcoole
Kilcoole () is a village in County Wicklow, Ireland. It is three kilometres (2 miles) south of Greystones, 14 kilometres (9 miles) north of Wicklow, and about 28 kilometres (17 miles) south of Dublin. It was used as the set for the Irish television series ''Glenroe'', which ran through the 1980s and 1990s. The village has a large industrial estate to the south. An area of marshland runs along the coast from Kilcoole south to Wicklow town, called the ''Murragh''. This area is home to many endangered species of plants and animals. History Located in the town of Kilcoole, County Wicklow border, Kilcoole GAA Club was founded in 1885. Glenealy () is a village west of Wicklow Town, in County Wicklow, on the R752 road (Ireland), R752 road. The Dublin–Rosslare Europort, Rosslare railway line also passes through the village.
