Wi Kuki Kaa
Wi Kuki Kaa (16 December 1938 – 19 February 2006) was a New Zealand actor in film, theatre and television. He was from the Māori iwi of Ngati Porou and Ngati Kahungunu. Family Kaa was born in Rangitukia on New Zealand's East Cape. His father was the Reverend Tipi Whenua Kaa, from Rangitukia, who was vicar of the Waiapu parish and his mother Hohipene Kaa (formerly Whaanga) was from Wairoa. He was one of 12 children: his siblings include the writer and te reo advocate Keri Kaa, Hone Kaa, an Anglican church leader, child welfare advocate, and Arapera Blank, a writer and poet. Career Kaa featured in many films, including the lead role of 'Iwi' in ''Ngati'' (1987), written by Tama Poata and directed by Barry Barclay. Kaa won the "Best Film Performance, Male" at the 1988 New Zealand Film and TV Awards for this role, and in 1987 alongside Barclay, Poata and producer John O'Shea attended a screening at Cannes Film Festival in the Critics Week programme. Rangitukia
Rangitukia is a small settlement 10 kilometres south of East Cape in the northeast of New Zealand's North Island. It is near the mouth of the Waiapu River. The settlement is an important place in Ngāti Porou and the founding place for Christian missions in the Gisborne District. The Rangitukia cemetery includes the burial ground of Canon Hone Kaa and former Māori All Black George Nēpia. Marae Rangitukia has two marae, belonging to the Ngāti Porou hapū of Ngāi Tāne, Ngāti Hokopū, Ngāti Nua, Te Whānau a Hunaara, Te Whānau a Rerewa and Te Whānau a Takimoana: Hinepare Marae and Te Tairawhiti meeting house, and Ōhinewaiapu Marae and meeting house. ''Utu'' is a 1983 New Zealand film directed and co-written by Geoff Murphy; starring Anzac Wallace as Te Wheke, a warrior who sets out to get vengeance after British forces kill his people, Bruno Lawrence and Kelly Johnson. Sometimes described as "a Maori Western", ''Utu'' was reputed to have one of the largest budgets for a New Zealand film up until that time. The film'' ''screened out of competition at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, and became the second most successful local movie released in New Zealand to that date. ''Spyforce'' is an Australian television series that aired from 1971 to 1973 on Nine Network. The series was based upon the adventures of Australian Military Intelligence operatives in the South West Pacific during World War II.
