Whys And Other Whys
''Whys and Other Whys'' (titled ''Whys and Otherwise'' in its sound reissue) is a 1927 silent animated short subject featuring Felix the Cat. Plot Felix is supposed to attend his job at a daycare center. Instead he spends time drinking booze at a local tavern. By the time he proceeds to his work, he is already late by several minutes. His drunkenness also slows him down. At the daycare center, the iceweasel, who is Felix's domineering buddy and colleague, is very annoyed and is even holding a car muffler. He is not happy because he had to do Felix's work as well as his. Felix finally enters the workplace, and already senses trouble brewing. To calm the iceweasel, Felix attempts to make up stories. Felix tells how he tried to buy a suit for the iceweasel as a Christmas gift he and his buddy talked about previously. Otto Messmer
Otto James Messmer (August 16, 1892 – October 28, 1983) was an American animator known for his work on the Felix the Cat cartoons and comic strip produced by the Pat Sullivan studio. The extent of Messmer's role in the creation and popularity of Felix is a matter of ongoing dispute, particularly as he only laid his claim to the character after the death of Sullivan, who until that time had received the credit. Early life Messmer was born August 16, 1892, in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now Union City). He attended Holy Family Parochial School. He had a love of vaudeville and the entertainment industry instilled in him by his parents and teachers beginning at a young age. He attended the Thomas School of Art in New York City from 1911–1913, and participated in a work-study program with the Acme Agency, where he did illustrations for fashion catalogs.Rosero, Jessica (May 14, 2006). Felix The Cat
Felix the Cat is a cartoon character created in 1919 by Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer during the silent film era. An anthropomorphic black cat with white eyes, a black body, and a giant grin, he was one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first animated character to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences. Felix originated from the studio of Australian cartoonist- film entrepreneur Pat Sullivan. Either Sullivan himself or his lead animator, American Otto Messmer, created the character. What is certain is that Felix emerged from Sullivan's studio, and cartoons featuring the character became big in popular culture. Aside from the animated shorts, Felix starred in a comic strip (drawn by Sullivan, Messmer and later Joe Oriolo) beginning in 1923, and his image soon adorned merchandise such as ceramics, toys and postcards.
