''Why the Sheriff Is a Bachelor'' (sub-titled ''The Fragile Reward of Duty'') is a 1914 American short silent Western film produced by Selig Polyscope Company and written by Joseph A. Golden who co-directed with the star Tom Mix. It is a remake of the 1911 film of the same title in which Mix also starred. The 1914 version is held at the Library of Congress. Roy Watson (August 6, 1876 – June 7, 1937) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 120 films between 1911 and 1935. Biography Born in Richmond, Virginia, Watson began to act on stage in 1895. He went to Hollywood in 1909. Watson's first work with films was with the Selig Company when he appeared in ''The Hazards of Helen''. Watson was married to, and divorced from actress Jane Keckley. He lived at the McCadden Hotel before moving to a rest home. He died at the Hollywood Hospital in Hollywood, California, on June 7, 1937. Tom Mix (1880–1940) was an American motion picture actor, director, and writer whose career spanned from 1910 to 1935. During this time he appeared in 270 films and established himself as the screen's most popular cowboy star. Mix's flair for showmanship set the standard for later cowboy heroes such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. His horse Tony also became a celebrity who received his own fan mail. Born in Pennsylvania, Mix served in the United States Army before moving to the Oklahoma Territory in 1902. Three years later, after working as a physical fitness instructor, bartender, and peace officer, he was hired as a full-time cowboy for the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch. Soon after, Mix established himself as the star attraction of the Millers' Wild West Show. In early 1910 Mix agreed to work as an actor and wrangler for the Selig Polyscope Company.
