Egypt has submitted films for consideration for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1958, when Youssef Chahine's ''Cairo Station'' became both the first African and the first Arab film to contend for the award. The Foreign Film award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The award was created for the 1956 Academy Awards, succeeding the non-competitive Honorary Academy Awards which were presented between 1947 and 1955 to the best foreign language films released in the United States. Egypt has submitted thirty-six films to the Foreign Oscar competition but has never yet achieved a coveted Oscar nomination. This is a list of submissions to the 49th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 49th Academy Awards, twenty-four films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. System of a Down (also known as SoaD or simply System) is an Armenian-American heavy metal band formed in Glendale, California, in 1994. Gamil Ratib ( ar, جميل راتب; 18 August 1926 – 19 September 2018) was an Egyptian actor. He appeared in television and film productions and briefly in theater over a 65-year career. He was known for numerous villainous roles and his appearance in the English-language epic historical drama film ''Lawrence of Arabia''. Biography Born in 1926 in Cairo to an Egyptian family known of their love for arts, Ratib was sent to study arts in Paris. His love of performance came from French theatre, which he studied at the University of France, before making his film debut in 1945. He was a much-awarded actor in both his native Egypt and in France, having worked in both countries, including being given the Legion of Honour. In France, Ratib married a French woman and was given French citizenship. He was an iconic actor in both Egyptian cinema and television, portraying dramatic, psychological and romantic roles. Career Yassin studied law at the Ain Shams University in 1964, then he started his acting career in 1968, where he acted in more than 150 films and theatrical plays.
