Whitty Street
Whitty Street is a street in Shek Tong Tsui, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. Named after R.C. Whitty, the first manager of Hong Kong and China Gas Company, p. 248 the street is well known as one of seven terminals of the Hong Kong Tramways. The road starts from Queen's Road West, crossing Des Voeux Road West and ends in Connaught Road West. In the 1970s, there was a plan for an MTR station (named Whitty station) to be built beneath the street for the residents of Shek Tong Tsui. Space is reserved for the exit of the future station. Nonetheless, the plan has never come to fruition. A new plan suggests that a station would be built near the private housing estate The Belcher's instead of on Whitty Street. These MTR proposals were eventually superseded by the West Island line extension, which opened HKU station just south of Shek Tong Tsui. Shek Tong Tsui or Belcher Point is an area in Sai Wan on Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. Administratively, it belongs to the Central and Western District. This area is bounded north by the Victoria Harbour, south by Pok Fu Lam Road and Third Street, and west by the intersection of Queen's Road West and Belcher's Street. To the east lies Sai Ying Pun and to the west is Kennedy Town. To the south are the slopes of Victoria Peak and High West. The Hong Kong And China Gas Company
The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, doing business as Towngas, is the sole provider of towngas in Hong Kong. Founded in 1862, it is one of the oldest listed companies in the territory. History In February 1862, the concession to supply gas to the city of Victoria (the centre of which now referred to as Central), was obtained from then governor Sir Hercules Robinson by William Glen, a newcomer to the gas industry. Incorporation took place on 3 June 1862 and, by 3 December 1864 that year, there were of pipes and 500 gas lamps along Queen's Road and Upper Valley Road. Across the harbour, residents in Kowloon continued to rely on candles and oil lamps until gas was laid on 28 years later. Hong Kong Tramways (HKT) is a narrow-gauge tram system in Hong Kong. Queen's Road West
Queen's Road is a collection of roads along the northern coast of Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong, within the limit of Victoria City. It was the first road in Hong Kong, constructed by the British between 1841 and 1843, spanning across Victoria City from Shek Tong Tsui to Wan Chai. At various points along the route, Queen's Road marks the original shoreline before land reclamation projects permanently extended land into Victoria Harbour. Des Voeux Road Central and Des Voeux Road West are two roads on the north shore of Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. They were named after the 10th Governor of Hong Kong, Sir William Des Vœux. The name was sometimes spelt with the ligature œ in pre-war documents but is nowadays spelt officially as Des Voeux Road. Connaught Road West
Connaught Road is a major thoroughfare on the north shore of Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It links Shing Sai Road in Kennedy Town to the west and Harcourt Road in Admiralty to the east. Location The road consists of two adjoining sections, namely Connaught Road Central () and Connaught Road West (). Connaught Road Central runs the length of Central, parallel to the north shore. HKU () is a station on the Hong Kong MTR located in the Shek Tong Tsui neighbourhood of Western, Hong Kong. It is named after the University of Hong Kong, which is served by the station. The Belcher's () is a Private housing estates in Hong Kong, private residential estate in Shek Tong Tsui, Hong Kong Island. It consists of six residential buildings constructed in two phases; three buildings were constructed in each phase. Construction for the first phase was completed in 2000, and in 2001 for the second phase. The estate was named after the adjacent Belcher's Street, which in turned was named after Sir Edward Belcher, a Canadian-born British naval officer and explorer. Island Line (MTR)
The Island line is one of eleven lines of the MTR, the mass transit system in Hong Kong. It runs from Kennedy Town in the Western district to Chai Wan in the Eastern District on Hong Kong Island, passing through the territory's major business districts of Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, and connecting them with built-up areas on the north shore of the island.
