Whitmore High School is a co-educational secondary school situated in Barry, Wales. History Whitmore High School was formed in September 2018 during a reform of secondary education in the area, when the single-sex Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School and Barry Comprehensive School Barry Comprehensive School ( cy, Ysgol Gyfun y Barri) was a secondary school for boys aged 11–16, situated opposite Highlight Park in the town of Barry, in Wales. In 2018, plans to build a new building for the school were announced, with construction started in September 2019. Staff and students moved into the new school building in May 2021. Barry ( cy, Y Barri; ) is a town in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, on the north coast of the Bristol Channel approximately south-southwest of Cardiff. Barry is a seaside resort, with attractions including several beaches and the resurrected Barry Island Pleasure Park. According to Office for National Statistics 2016 estimate data, the population of Barry was 54,673. Once a small village, Barry has absorbed its larger neighbouring villages of Cadoxton and Barry Island, and now, Sully. It grew significantly from the 1880s with the development of Barry Docks, which in 1913 was the largest coal port in the world. Etymology The origin of the town's name is disputed. Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School
Pencoedtre High School, formerly called the Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School, is located in Merthyr Dyfan on the outskirts of the town of Barry near Cardiff in Wales. It was opened in 1971 (Pencoedtre High School in 2018). Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School was an 11-19 girls' comprehensive school for approximately 1,300 students. But since 2018 the school has mixed and is now a mixed-sex school, re-named to Pencoedtre High School. It shares a mixed-sex joint 6th form with Barry Comprehensive School, formerly a boys' school, now co-educational under the name 'Whitmore High School', also since 2018. A new co-educational school reopened on the same site called Whitmore High School. History Barry Boys’ Comprehensive School was formed by the merger of Barry Boys' Grammar School and the three Boys' Secondary Modern Schools (Cadoxton, Gladstone and Romilly) in September 1966 with the introduction of comprehensive schools for boys. In 1993, Barry Sixth Form, a joint sixth form with Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School was created. In 1998, the school dropped the word 'Boys' from its name and thus adopted its current name.
