Whitingham Village Historic District
The Whitingham Village Historic District encompasses much of the current village center of Whitingham, Vermont. It was developed mainly in the second half of the 19th century around industries powered by local water sources, and includes well-preserved architecture from that period. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Description and history The present village of Whitingham was established in 1822, when a mineral spring with supposed healing properties was found in the area. Sadawga Brook, which feeds the Deerfield River via Harriman Reservoir, drops substantially after leaving Sadawga Lake, and provided a source of water power for industries. By 1840 the village included a gristmill, sawmill, and wood turning shop, along with a small cluster of homes. Vermont Route 100
Vermont Route 100 (VT 100) is a north–south state highway in Vermont in the United States. Running through the center of the state, it travels nearly the entire length of Vermont and is long. VT 100 is the state's longest numbered highway of any type. Route description The southern terminus of the route is at the Massachusetts state line in Stamford, where it continues south as Route 8. Its northern terminus is at VT 105 in the town of Newport, which lies on the Canadian border. VT 100 passes along the eastern edge of the Green Mountain National Forest for much of its length and also passes through the Mad River Valley. Whitingham is a town in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The town was named for Nathan Whiting, a landholder. The population was 1,344 at the 2020 census. Whitingham is the birthplace of Brigham Young, the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and founder of Salt Lake City, Utah. Its village center, census-designated place, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Whitingham Village Historic District. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.3 square miles (101.8 km2) of which 37.1 square miles (96.0 km2) is land and 2.2 square miles (5.8 km2) (5.70%) is water. Whitingham is the central village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Whitingham, Windham County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 91, compared to 1,344 in the entire town. Part of the village comprises the Whitingham Village Historic District. The CDP is in southwestern Windham County, west of the geographic center of the town of Whitingham. The community sits on a hill rising to the east above the south end of the Harriman Reservoir, an impoundment on the Deerfield River, which flows south and east to the Connecticut River in Massachusetts. Deerfield River
Deerfield River is a river that runs for from southern Vermont through northwestern Massachusetts to the Connecticut River. The Deerfield River was historically influential in the settlement of western Franklin County, Massachusetts, and its namesake town. Harriman Dam is a hydroelectric dam in Windham County, Vermont in the town of Whitingham. The water from the dam flows through a penstock to a power generation plant in the adjacent town of Readsboro. The dam was built in 1923 by the New England Power Company.
