Whiteway, Newfoundland And Labrador
Whiteway is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The town had a population of 351 in the Canada 2021 Census. History Whiteway is located in a large open cove, known as Witless Bay. At the centre of the bay is Witless Rock, "a distinctive and jagged protrusion shown on English maps as early as 1775." The community was known as Witless or Witler's Bay, and was not settled until the mid-1800s. A family tradition maintains that a man named Burgess, who deserted the ship Royal Gazette at Crocker's Cove in about 1847, was the first permanent settler. Two families were living there in 1869, likely those of Charles Burgess and John Pottle. By 1874 there was a population of 31. Originally known as Witless Bay, the community was renamed to Whiteway by proclamation on August 13, 1912. William Whiteway
Sir William Vallance Whiteway, (April 1, 1828 – June 24, 1908) was a politician and three time Premier of Colony of Newfoundland, Newfoundland. Life and career Born in Littlehempston, Devon, England, Whiteway emigrated to Newfoundland in 1843 and entered the law in 1852. In 1859 he was elected to the House of Assembly as a member of the Conservative Party of Newfoundland and became a supporter of Canadian confederation. He lost his seat in the 1869 election on confederation but returned in 1874 and served as solicitor, Solicitor-General in the government of Sir Frederick Carter before becoming Premier in 1878 when he succeeded Carter as leader of the Conservatives. He was made a Queen's Counsel in 1865. While serving as Solicitor-General, Whiteway was one of the counsel representing the British Government before the Halifax Fisheries Commission, which adjudicated a dispute over north Atlantic fishing rights between the British Empire and the United States. Witless Bay
Witless Bay is a town on the Avalon Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Located on the Irish Loop, 35 km south of the provincial capital, St. John's, Witless Bay is a small, scenic, traditional Newfoundland outport community. The town had a population of 1640 in the Canada 2021 Census. It is connected to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Witless Bay is the setting for Howard Norman's novel, ''The Bird Artist''. Etymology One of the original European inhabitants of the area was Captain Whittle, who had brought his family from Dorset, England, to Newfoundland. The area was named after them: Whittle's Bay.
