Whiteness Project
Whiteness Project: Inside the White/Caucasian Box is a 2014 interactive documentary investigating how Americans who identify as “white” experience their ethnicity. Created by documentary filmmaker Whitney Dow and produced in association witAmerican Documentary , POV the project plans to conduct 1,000 interviews with white people from all socioeconomic backgrounds and localities in which they are questioned about “their relationship to, and their understanding of their own whiteness.” "Whiteness Project: Inside the White/Caucasian Box" is the first installment of a proposed larger project. It is a collection of 21 interviews filmed in Buffalo, NY in July 2014. Whitney Dow
Whitney Dow, born in 1961, is a documentary filmmaker, producer, and director. He is best known for Two Towns of Jasper' (co-directed by Marco Williams), a film about the murder of a black man committed by three white men in Jasper, Texas, which received a George Foster Peabody Award and an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award. ''Two Towns of Jasper'' was broadcast on the PBS documentary series POV in 2003. The film and the directors were featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Nightline. The film was the catalyst for a live town hall meeting, "America in Black and White," anchored by Ted Koppel. In 2014, Dow launched Whiteness Project with POV. ''Whiteness Project'' is an online "interactive investigation" into the experiences of white Americans. Marco Williams
Marco Williams is a documentary filmmaker and professor of film production at Northwestern University. His films have received several awards, including the Gotham Documentary Achievement Award for Two Towns of Jasper'' and he has been nominated three times for the Sundance Film Festival grand jury prize. Banished' (2007), directed and produced by Williams, tells the story of three American communities where 100 years ago white residents forced thousands of black families to flee their homes. The film documents black descendants as they return to confront their shocking histories. The film was awarded the Knight Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Features at the Miami International Film Festival and the Full Frame Documentary Festival Spectrum Award.
