White Slaves (film)
''White Slaves'' (german: Weisse Sklaven) is a 1937 German film directed by Karl Anton. It is also known by the longer title ''Panzerkreuzer Sebastopol: "Weisse Sklaven"'' (''Battleship Sevastopol: "White Slaves"'') and was later re-released as ''Rote Bestien'' ("Red Beasts"). An anti-Soviet propaganda film from the Nazi era, set during the Russian Revolution, the film was designed as a response to Eisenstein's ''Battleship Potemkin''. Plot summary In St. Petersburg in 1917 revolution is brewing, but in more far-flung parts of Russia life is apparently carrying on as usual. At Sevastopol the officers on board a battleship are looking forward to its return to port when they will be allowed to fraternise with local girls. Kostja, one of the officers, is particularly excited. He is in love with Marija, the daughter of Sevastopol's Governor. The deck of the ship is being prepared to become a dance-floor for a party. Karl Anton
Karl Anton or Karel Anton (25 October 1898 12 April 1979) was a Bohemian-born German film director, screenwriter and film producer. Biography He was born in Prague on 25 October 1898. His father Wilhelm Anton (1861–1918) was a physician. Anton studied medicine, but left the school after his father's death. He started as a stage actor and director in Vienna, Linz and Prague. During the World War I Anton made amateur documentaries with his friends Karel Lamač and Otto Heller. He directed his first movie, a lyrical drama ''Gypsies'', in 1921. Anton is considered an early proponent of Czech lyrical cinema tradition. He founded his own production companies Antonfilm (1923–30) and Sonorfilm (1930–32). After the international success of ''Tonka of the Gallows'' he worked in Paris for Paramount Pictures from 1932 to 1935. After leaving Paramount he moved to Germany in 1935. Albert Peter Adam Florath (7 December 1888, Bielefeld – 11 March 1957, Gaildorf) was a German stage and film actor. Early life and education Born to Joseph Florath, a locksmith, and his wife Matilda, née Burkart, he attended school in Brakel and the Realgymnasium in Paderborn. He was bailiff candidate in Delbrück, where he was active in the welfare, church and school department and the police administration. Agnes Josephine Straub (2 April 1890 – 8 July 1941) was a German film actress. Biography Agnes Josephine Straub was born on 2 April 1890 in Munich. She made her stage debut in Dachau at the age of 13. She began attending acting lessons and, in 1908, acted as Sappho in Grillparzer's play. After acting in Bonn, Köningsberg, and Vienna, Straub traveled to Berlin and acted alongside actresses such as Elisabeth Bergner and Grete Mosheim. From 1925 onwards Straub mainly worked with her husband, the actor and director Lionel Royce. In 1930, Royce created his own theater company called the Agnes-Straub-Ensemble.
