White Horse Tavern (East Whiteland Township, Pennsylvania)
White Horse Tavern, also known as the White Horse Inn and Old Swanenburg Farm, is a historic inn and tavern located in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The building consists of two sections. The original section dates to about 1750, and is a two-story, stuccoed stone structure. The western section was added about 1790. Located at mile marker 24 on the Old Lancaster Road, it was an overnight stop on the first stage from Philadelphia to Lancaster. General George Washington used the older part as his headquarters following the Battle of Brandywine and during the aborted " Battle of the Clouds." East Whiteland Township is a township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,650 at the 2010 census. Mailing addresses associated with East Whiteland include Malvern, Frazer, and a small area of Exton. History Founded in 1704, Whiteland Township was made up of what is today known as East and West Whiteland townships. The first European settlers were Welsh. The name Whiteland came from Whitford Garden in Flintshire, Wales. Whiteland Township was divided into two townships in 1765. Native Americans called the area "The Dark Valley" because of the numerous trees and undergrowth. During the American Revolution, Gen. The Battle of the Clouds (also known as the Battle of Warren, Battle of Whitehorse Tavern, or the Battle of Goshen) was an aborted engagement of the Philadelphia campaign of the American Revolutionary War on September 16, 1777, in the area surrounding present day Malvern, Pennsylvania. After the American defeat at the Battle of Brandywine, the British Army remained encamped near Chadds Ford. When British commander William Howe was informed that the weakened American force was less than ten miles (16 km) away, he decided to press for another decisive victory.
