White Deer Plain (film)
''White Deer Plain'' () is a 2011 Chinese drama film directed by Wang Quan'an and based on the novel of the same name by Chen Zhongshi. The film competed in competition for the Golden Bear at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, where Lutz Reitemeier was awarded a Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution (Photography). The film focuses primarily on Bai Juaxian, his son Xiaowen and Hei Wa up to the point of the war with Japan. Many of the other characters in the novel are not mentioned. Plot Bai Juaxian is the elder of a rural village on White Deer Plain. He treats his farm hand Lu San as a brother and considers his son Xiaowen and Lu San's son Hei Wa brothers. When the cart delivering the village's grain contributions to the Emperor returns, they learn that the Emperor has been replaced by the Nationalist (KMT) government. Wang Quan'an
Wang Quan'an () (b. 1965) is a Sixth Generation Chinese film director. Wang was born in Yan'an, China. He graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 1991. He had a ten-year relationship with actress and muse Yu Nan, which ended in 2009. Career Unlike many of his contemporaries, who focus on urban life, Wang's films have often emphasized China's rural life, including ''Jingzhe'' and ''Tuya's Marriage'' (2007). Wang's films have also often focused on female protagonists, including his first four films, who all starred actress Yu Nan. Wang's 2009 film, ''Weaving Girl'' took him to familiar territory, exploring working class female experiences in modern-day China. Chen Zhongshi
Chen Zhongshi (; 3 August 1942 – 29 April 2016) was a Chinese author. He started writing prose in 1965 and finished his magnum opus ''White Deer Plain'' in 1993 (for which he won the Mao Dun Literature Prize in 1997). In 1979, he became a member of the Chinese Writers Association (which he at one point served as the association's vice chairman). Biography Chen was born in Xi'an, Shaanxi on 3 August 1942. After graduating from No. 34 High School of Xi'an in 1962, he got a teaching job in primary school and, after two years, became a senior high school teacher. In 1966, Chen joined the Chinese Communist Party. He was interested in literature and soon began devoting himself to a writing career. Zhang Fengyi (born 1 September 1956) is a Chinese actor best known for his role as "Duan Xiaolou" in ''Farewell My Concubine (film), Farewell My Concubine'' (1993), Jing Ke in ''The Emperor and the Assassin'' (1998), and Cao Cao in ''Red Cliff (film), Red Cliff'' (2008–2009). The Golden Bear (german: Goldener Bär) is the highest prize awarded for the best film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The bear is the heraldic animal of Berlin, featured on both the coat of arms and flag of Berlin. History The winners of the first Berlin International Film Festival in 1951 were determined by a West German panel, with five winners of the Golden Bear, divided by categories and genres. The 62nd annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 9 to 19 February 2012. British film director Mike Leigh was the President of the Jury. The Berlin International Film Festival (german: Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin), usually called the Berlinale (), is a major international film festival held annually in Berlin, Germany. Founded in 1951 and originally run in June, the festival has been held every February since 1978 and is one of the " Big Three" alongside the Venice Film Festival in Italy and the Cannes Film Festival in France.
