White Crosses
White Crosses (in German: ''Weiße Kreuze'') is a memorial for those who died during the Cold War at the Berlin Wall. It is located at the shore of the river Spree in Berlin next to the Reichstag building, which houses the German parliament. Established by the private group ''Berliner Bürger-Verein'' on the 10th anniversary of the Berlin Wall in 1971 it was first located east of the Reichstag on a fence directly in front of the wall. After the German reunification in 1990 it kept its location until construction of the new government buildings next to the Reichstag was started at the end of that century – Berlin was chosen to be the new capital of Germany.berlin.de: “Weisse Kreuze” memorial / German Bundestag' During construction the memorial was moved to a location south of the Reichstag next to the Tiergarten. Marienetta "Micki" Jirkowsky (25 August 1962 – 22 November 1980) was a German woman who became the one-hundred and twenty-fifth known person to die at the Berlin Wall. Jirkowsky was shot and killed by East German border guards during an escape attempt, and at 18 years was one of the youngest victims and the youngest of the 8 women killed at the Berlin wall. Biography Marienetta Jirkowsky was born on 25 August 1962, in Bad Saarow, East Germany, the only child to Klaus Jirkowsky, a skilled bricklayer, and his wife, Astrid, employed by the Reifenkombinat Fürstenwalde, a tyre manufacturing plant. Marienetta grew up in Spreenhagen and last lived at Birkenweg 13, where she was nicknamed "Micki" by her friends, as she was a "small, free-spirited and fun-loving person." Udo Düllick
Udo Düllick (3 August 1936 in Rehfelde, Werder – 5 October 1961 in Berlin) was one of the first to die at the Berlin Wall. He drowned while fleeing in the Spree (river), Spree river between Berlin-Friedrichshain, Friedrichshain and Berlin-Kreuzberg, Kreuzberg near the Oberbaumbrücke in Berlin, Germany. Life Düllick studied engineering in Dresden and was employed by the Reichsbahn. He lived with his parents in Werder, near Strausberg, east of Berlin. There, he grew up with his older brother in a Catholic Church, Catholic family. The father remarried after the death of the mother. His brother went to West Germany in 1959. On the evening of 5 October 1961 he attended a company party of the Reichsbahn. There he came into conflict with a supervisor, where he tore off the Shoulder marks of his Reichsbahn uniform. He was then fired on the spot. With a taxi he drove northward to Berlin's East Port and jumped into the water. While he was swimming towards the west, the border guards ...
