White Boy (EP)
''White Boy'' is the fifth extended play release by Australian rock band Magic Dirt. It was released independently in November 2009 and remains the band's final release. Background and release The EP was originally released to coincide with Magic Dirt's October 2009 Australian tour, but has become something of a sad epitaph for this much-loved Melbourne rock band with news of the passing of bassist and co-founder Dean Turner in late August 2009. Turned founded Magic Dirt in 1992 and played bass in the band until he died on 21 August 2009. Magic Dirt had planned a tour in August but Turner's deteriorating condition led to its cancellation. Following Turner's death, the band agreed to complete run of shows in October and November in 2009. At these shows, the band gave out DVDs of recent video clips to fans for free. Magic Dirt
Magic Dirt are an Australian rock band, which formed in 1991 in Geelong, Victoria, with Daniel Herring on guitar, Adam Robertson on drums, Adalita Srsen on vocals and guitar, and Dean Turner (musician), Dean Turner on bass guitar. Initially forming an alternative underground band called Deer Bubbles which split and formed into the much heavier, rock based group called The Jim Jims, they were renamed as Magic Dirt. Their top 40 releases on the ARIA Charts, ARIA Albums Chart are ''Friends in Danger'' (1996), ''What Are Rock Stars Doing Today'' (2000), ''Tough Love (Magic Dirt album), Tough Love'' (2003) and ''Snow White (album), Snow White'' (2005). They have received nine ARIA Music Award nominations including four at the ARIA Music Awards of 1995 for ''Life Was Better'' – their second extended play. Dean Turner (musician)
Dean Turner (6 January 1972 – 21 August 2009) was an Australian rock musician and record producer. He was best known as a founding member and bass player of Australian rock band Magic Dirt. Career Turner began playing the bass guitar in 1989 and in 1990 he formed Deer Bubbles with Adalita Srsen. In 1991 the pair, along with guitarist Daniel Herring, started a new band, briefly known as The Jim Jims. With the addition of drummer Adam Robertson, they became known as "Magic Dirt". Under the name Dean Dirt, Turner also produced recordings for a number of Australian bands, including two albums for theredsunband plus releases for Gersey and Sons Of The Sun. In the period up until his death, he was acting as the manager for Brisbane band Violent Soho. Gareth Liddiard (born 20 November 1975) is an Australian musician, best known as a founding member of both The Drones and Tropical Fuck Storm. Musically active since 1997, he has also released a solo album titled ''Strange Tourist'' in 2010. In 2021, Liddiard recorded and performed live with Jim White of the Dirty Three and Chris Abrahams of The Necks as Springtime. Liddiard has often been called one of Australia's greatest songwriters and The Drones song "Shark Fin Blues", penned by Liddiard and Rui Pereira, was voted by the band's contemporaries as the greatest Australian song of all time in 2009. The Drones (Australian Band)
The Drones were an Australian rock band, formed in Perth by mainstay lead vocalist and guitarist Gareth Liddiard in 1997. Fiona Kitschin, his domestic partner, joined on bass guitar and vocals in 2002. Other long-term members include Rui Pereira on bass guitar and then lead guitar; Mike Noga on drums, vocals, harmonica and percussion; and Dan Luscombe on lead guitar, vocals and keyboards. Their second album, '' Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By'' (April 2005), won the inaugural Australian Music Prize. The Birthday Party (originally known as The Boys Next Door) were an Australian post-punk band, active from 1977 to 1983. The group's "bleak and noisy soundscapes," which drew irreverently on blues, free jazz, and rockabilly, provided the setting for vocalist Nick Cave's disturbing tales of violence and perversion. Their 1981 single " Release the Bats" was particularly influential on the emerging gothic scene. Despite limited commercial success, The Birthday Party's influence has been far-reaching, and they have been called "one of the darkest and most challenging post-punk groups to emerge in the early '80s."
