Whirly-Girls
The Whirly-Girls, officially known as Whirly-Girls International, are a non-profit, charitable and educational organization that aims to advance women in helicopter aviation. They are an affiliate member of the Helicopter Association International. The Whirly-Girls and the Ninety-Nines have many members in common. History The Whirly-Girls were founded by Jean Ross Howard Phelan, an American helicopter pilot, in 1955. At the time there were so few women with helicopter ratings that the group started with only 13 charter members representing the United States, Germany, and France. The Whirly-Girls provided a community for female helicopter pilots to share interests, remove feelings of isolation, and to come together in annual "Hoverings" beginning in April 1955. Ann Shaw Carter
Ann Shaw Carter (December 5, 1922 – September 26, 2005) was an American pilot who was the first female commercial helicopter pilot and the second woman to fly a helicopter, after the German pilot, Hanna Reitsch. Carter was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on December 5, 1922, and moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, as a child. During World War II, she studied aircraft building in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She then got a job with Chance-Vought as a factory riveter, assembling F4U Corsair aircraft, to finance flying lessons. She joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in 1944, training in Texas, and was a member of the last graduating set before the program was discontinued that year. After the end of the war, she was the first American woman to learn to pilot a helicopter, receiving her commercial helicopter license on June 12, 1947, more than nine years after Hannah Reitsch's demonstration flight in February 1938. Jean Ross Howard Phelan
Jean Ross Howard Phelan (1916–2004) was the founder of the Whirly Girls and the 13th woman in the world to earn her helicopter accreditation. Personal life She was born on September 5, 1916, in Washington, D.C., as Jean Ross Howard. Her grandfather was John W. Ross, . Education Phelan attended Sidwell Friends School and Western High School. She went to Connecticut College and then transferred to George Washington University, where she received a bachelor's degree in history in 1939. In 1955, she earned a master's degree in history from American University with her thesis on "Selected Economic Problems in the Operation of Common Carrier Helicopters." The Helicopter Association International (HAI) is a not-for-profit professional trade association of over member organizations in more than 68 nations. Hanna Reitsch
Hanna Reitsch (29 March 1912 – 24 August 1979) was a German aviator and test pilot. Along with Melitta von Stauffenberg, she flight tested many of Germany's new aircraft during World War II and received many honors. Reitsch was among the very last people to meet Adolf Hitler alive in the in late April 1945. Reitsch set more than 40 flight altitude records and women's endurance records in gliding and unpowered flight, before and after World War II. In the 1960s, she was sponsored by the West German foreign office as a technical adviser in Ghana and elsewhere, and founded a gliding school in Ghana, where she worked for Kwame Nkrumah. Edna Gardner Whyte
Edna Gardner Whyte (November 3, 1902 – February 15, 1992) was an American aviator whose career as a pilot and instructor spanned more than four decades. She was also an air racer who won more than two dozen races. Biography Edna Marvel Gardner was born in 1902 in Mankato, Minnesota. Her father died in a train accident when she was 8, she was raised by her mother. She trained to become a registered nurse, earning her certification in 1924. She took her first flight in 1926, from Renton, Washington. Her first solo was on Jan. 1, 1931,and she received her pilot's license in May 1931. A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by horizontally spinning rotors.
