Whirlwind (pinball)
''Whirlwind'' is a pinball machine produced by Williams in 1990 and was one of the last Williams System 11b games. It was designed by Pat Lawlor, who created a previous natural disaster-themed pinball for Williams, '' Earthshaker!''. Gameplay ''Whirlwind'' is distinguished by three playfield rotating discs, and a fan topper that blows wind on the player at certain times in the game. The objective in ''Whirlwind'' is to move the storm using the compass targets to light ball locks for multiball. In multiball, a progressive jackpot can be scored by making left ramp shots from the upper right flipper. Alternatively, one can work towards the "Wizard Mode" by lighting and collecting all of the seven "Super Cellar Door" values. WMS Industries, Inc. was an American electronic gaming and amusement manufacturer in Enterprise, Nevada. It was merged into Scientific Games in 2016. WMS's predecessor was the Williams Manufacturing Company, founded in 1943 by Harry E. Williams. However, the company that became WMS Industries was formally founded in 1974 as Williams Electronics, Inc. Williams initially was a manufacturer of pinball machines. Pat Lawlor
Patrick M. Lawlor (born November 30, 1951) is a video game and pinball machine designer. Pat Lawlor had originally been a video game designer and had entered the coin-operated game design industry in 1980, working for Dave Nutting Associates. Lawlor's pinball career began as an engineer for Williams in 1987, when he co-designed a dual-playfield machine called ''Banzai Run'' with Larry DeMar. In 1988, he was assigned his first individual design project, a machine entitled '' Earthshaker!'', which was released in January 1989. Notably, ''Earthshaker!'' was the first pinball machine with a shaker motor. Early games Lawlor's first solo project, ''Earthshaker!'', was noteworthy for its implementation of a relatively obscure theme (earthquakes). Christopher P. Granner (born 1957 in Mt. Kisco, New York) is a freelance music composer, best known for composing music for video games and pinball games. Career and biography Granner's father is organist/pianist, so he was interested in music since his childhood. He studied composition and computer sound/music at University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign under prolific musicians Ben Johnston, Herbert Brün, Salvatore Martirano and Scott Wyatt. After finishing university with a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Fine Arts in music composition he moved to Evanston-located Northwestern University's music lab. There Granner heard that Williams Electronics (which evolved in Midway Games) was looking for composer, and he took the job and became leading composer in coin-op and pinball industry. Pinball games are a family of games in which a ball is propelled into a specially designed table where it bounces off various obstacles, scoring points either en route or when it comes to rest. Historically the board was studded with nails called 'pins' and had hollows or pockets which scored points if the ball came to rest in them. The game features an earthquake theme and was advertised with the slogan "It's a Moving Experience!"
