Inez Whipple Wilder
Inez Whipple Wilder (May 19, 1871 – April 29, 1929), born Inez Luanne Whipple, was an American herpetologist and anatomist, affiliated with Smith College from 1902 until her death. She made notable contributions to the study of fingerprints and the biology of salamanders. Early life and education Wilder was born on May 19, 1871, at Diamond Hill, Cumberland, Rhode Island, the third and youngest child of parents Eliab Daniel and Sarah Whipple (''née'' Wheaton). She graduated from Rhode Island Normal School (now Rhode Island College) in 1890, and earned a Ph.B. at Brown University in 1900. She then taught at Rhode Island Normal School and Northampton High School until joining the faculty of Smith College in 1902 as instructor of zoology. Robert Stewart Whipple (1 August 1871 – 13 December 1953) was a businessman in the British scientific instrument trade, a collector of science books and scientific instruments, and an author on their history. He amassed a unique collection of antique scientific instruments that he later donated to found the Whipple Museum of the History of Science in Cambridge in 1944. Life Robert Whipple's father, George Mathews Whipple, was superintendent of the Royal Observatory at Kew, where his mother Elizabeth Beckley also worked. After attending King's College School, Whipple began his career at the Kew Observatory as an assistant, before leaving to become assistant manager at instrument making firm L. P. Casella. Maurine Whipple (January 20, 1903 – April 12, 1992) was an American novelist and short story writer best known for her novel ''The Giant Joshua'' (1941). The book is lauded as one of the most important Mormon novels, vividly depicting pioneer and polygamous life in the 19th century. Whipple grew up in St. George, Utah. She attended Utah Tech University, Dixie College, then graduated from the University of Utah with honors. She taught high school for several years in both Utah and Idaho. Mark John Whipple (born April 1, 1957) is an American football coach, who most recently served as offensive coordinator at Nebraska in 2022. Whipple was the head football coach at University of New Haven from 1988 to 1993, Brown University from 1994 to 1997, and stints as the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass), from 1998 to 2003 and 2014 to 2018. His 1998 UMass team won the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship. He was the quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) in 2011 and 2012. Before joining the Browns in January 2011, Whipple worked for two seasons as the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami. Joseph Whipple III
Joseph Whipple III (July 3, 1725 – 1761) was a merchant in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and a Deputy Governor of the colony. The son of Deputy Governor Joseph Whipple Jr. who was a very wealthy merchant, Whipple was born in Newport, the second of nine children. He must have had very good political connections because he became Deputy Governor aged 25, but two years later he became financially insolvent, and was forced to give up his position in 1753. He had to sell the farm left to him in his father's will and liquidate other properties to pay his debts. Many ship owners went bankrupt in the middle of the 18th century. The use of paper money got part of the blame for this, but the protracted war with Spain and France had a major impact on commerce. The young and inexperienced Whipple had not yet developed the business acumen to avert these financial difficulties.
