Whimsical (horse)
Whimsical (foaled 1903 at Catesby Woodford's Raceland Farm near Paris, Kentucky) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. She is best known as the second filly to ever win the Preakness Stakes. Background Whimsical was sired by Orlando, out of the mare, Kismet, who was sired by United States Racing Hall of Fame stallion, Hindoo. Racing career As a two-year-old Whimsical won the Belles Stakes and Golden Rod Stakes at Sheepshead Bay and finished second when racing against colts in the Champagne Stakes. At age three she won the Standard Stakes at Gravesend in which she defeated 1905 Preakness Stakes winner Cairngorm and 1905 Futurity Stakes winner Ormondale. In the Preakness Stakes she led from the start and won easily in a time of 1:45 by 4 lengths over Content and Larabie. Days Of The New (1997 Album)
''Days of the New'' (also known as the ''Orange'' or ''Yellow'' album) is the debut album of alternative rock band Days of the New, and the first of their three self-titled albums. The album was released in 1997 through Outpost Records. Production The band recorded its debut album in October and November 1996 at Woodland Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Drummer Matt Taul was called away from the studio during the sessions for the birth of his daughter, so session drummer Adam Turgeon filled in on some tracks. Travis Meeks named Dead Can Dance as an inspiration while working on the album. 'Travis Meeks's Biography' The last song on the album, "Cling" is actually a home demo that Meeks recorded on a four-track machine. The entire album is acoustic, with emphasis on guitar, and features dark melodies such as "Face of the Earth" and "Freak" as well as more up-tempo songs like "The Down Town" and "Where I Stand." The Whimsical Stakes is a thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid April at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A Grade III race since 2006, it is open to fillies and mares aged four and older. It is raced over a distance of 6 furlongs on Tapeta synthetic dirt and currently carries a purse of $115,500. Since its inception in 1956 at Toronto's Greenwood Raceway, the race has been contested at various distances: * 6 furlongs : 1956 at Greenwood Raceway, 1975 at Fort Erie Racetrack, 1976–1979, and since 1986 at Woodbine Racetrack * furlongs : 1957 at Greenwood Raceway, 1968-1974 at Fort Erie Racetrack * 7 furlongs : 1958-1960, 1980-1985 at Greenwood Raceway * 1 mile : 1961-1966 at Greenwood Raceway * 1 mile : 1967 on turf at Fort Erie Racetrack The race was run in two divisions in 1981 and 1984. Whimsical Will
Barret Eugene Hansen (born April 2, 1941), known professionally as Dr. Demento, is an American radio broadcaster and record collector specializing in novelty songs, comedy, and strange or unusual recordings dating from the early days of phonograph records to the present. Hansen created the Demento persona in 1970 while working at Pasadena, California, station KPPC-FM. He played "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus on the radio, and DJ "The Obscene" Steven Clean said that Hansen had to be "demented" to play it, and the name stuck. His weekly show went into syndication in 1974 and was syndicated by the Westwood One Radio Network from 1978 to 1992. Broadcast syndication of the show ended on June 6, 2010, but the show continues to be produced weekly in an online version. Hansen has a degree in ethnomusicology and has written magazine articles and liner notes on recording artists outside of the novelty genre.
