Joseph Whidbey
Joseph Whidbey Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (1757 – 9 October 1833) was a member of the Royal Navy who served on the Vancouver Expedition 1791–95, and later achieved renown as a naval engineer. He is notable for having been the first European to discover and chart Admiralty Island in the Alexander Archipelago in 1794. Little is recorded of Whidbey's life before his warranting as a sailing master in 1779. After years of service during the War of American Independence, he received a peacetime appointment to , where with then-Lieutenant George Vancouver, he conducted a detailed survey of Port Royal. ''Europa'' Ship decommissioning, paid off, but Whidbey soon gained a berth, along with Vancouver, in the newly built . Whidbey Telecom (legally Whidbey Telephone Company and often called Whidbey Tel) is a private, independent telecommunications company operating on the South End of Whidbey Island in Washington State, the community of Point Roberts, Washington, and its affiliate Hat Island Telephone Company on Hat (Gedney) Island. Whidbey Telecom has been locally owned and operated since it started business in 1908. History Whidbey Telephone was founded in 1908 by local business owners and farmers in Langley, Washington. They wanted to provide locally-owned telephone service to the Whidbey Island community. By 1902, all residents of South Whidbey had access to the Whidbey Telephone system. Point Whidbey
Point Whidbey is a headland located at the southern western extremity of both Coffin Bay Peninsula and Avoid Bay on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia about west of the town of Coffin Bay. It was described in 2012 as being “fronted by low cliffs and rises to a round hill, high, about 1 mile inland.” It is one of the features named by Matthew Flinders in February 1802 after his friend and Royal Navy officer, Joseph Whidbey. The Whidbey Isles Conservation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia which consists of seven islands located about west-southwest of Coffin Bay on the lower Eyre Peninsula. The conservation park consists of all of the islands in Whidbey Isles, i.e. the Four Hummocks group, Perforated Island, Price Island and Golden Island, with the exception of the most southerly island in the Four Hummocks which is the subject of a lighthouse reserve under the control of the Australian government. The land within the conservation park first acquired protected area status as a Fauna Conservation Reserve declared under the ''Crown Lands Act 1929'' on 16 March 1967. Whidbey Island
Whidbey Island (historical spellings Whidby, Whitbey, or Whitby) is the largest of the islands composing Island County, Washington, in the United States, and the largest island in Washington State. (The other large island is Camano Island, east of Whidbey.) Whidbey is about north of Seattle, and lies between the Olympic Peninsula and the I-5 corridor of western Washington. The island forms the northern boundary of Puget Sound. It is home to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The state parks and natural forests are home to numerous old growth trees. Gardner Canal
The Gardner Canal is one of the principal inlets of the British Columbia Coast. Technically a side-inlet of the larger Douglas Channel, the Gardner Canal is still in length in its own right; total length of the waterways converging on the Douglas Channel is making it one of the largest fjord-complexes in the world. Name origin It was named in 1793 by George Vancouver in honour of his friend and former commander, Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner. One of his men, Joseph Whidbey, first charted it the same year. Geography The entrance to the Gardner Canal is hidden behind Hawkesbury Island, and is accessed via Devastation Channel or Varney Passage which form the northeast and southeast flanks of that island.
