Nannup, Western Australia
Nannup is a town in the South West region of Western Australia, approximately south of Perth on the Blackwood River at the crossroads of Vasse Highway and Brockman Highway; the highways link Nannup to most of the lower South West's regional centres. At the 2011 census, Nannup had a population of 587. The town is the seat of the Shire of Nannup. History Nannup's name is of Noongar origin, meaning either "stopping place" or "place of parrots", and was first recorded by surveyors in the 1860s. The area was at one point known as "Lower Blackwood", and the first European settler to explore it was Thomas Turner in 1834. In 1866, a bridge was built over the river and a police station was established. A townsite was set aside in 1885, surveyed in 1889 and gazetted on 9 January 1890. In 1906, a primary school and shire office were built. In 1909, the Nannup Branch Railway (no longer in operation) was extended from Jarrahwood, linking to the Bunbury- Busselton railway. Whicher Range
Whicher Range, also known as Whicher Scarp, is a range in the South West region of Western Australia. The range has an average elevation of above sea level. Bounded by the Swan Coastal Plain to the west and the south, the Darling Scarp to the north and the Blackwood Plateau to the east, the range is approximately south of Busselton. The range has the form of a crescent shaped scarp. Composed of lateritic Mesozoic sediments, the range marks the southern and western edge of the Yilgarn Block. Ecological fragility The range is also the location of endemic rare flora and this had been identified in the 1970s. It has also been surveyed more recently in 2008, showing that further interest in the range's floristic uniqueness deserved more study. Petrophile
''Petrophile'' is a genus of evergreen shrubs, in the family Proteaceae. The genus is endemic to Australia. Commonly known as conebushes, they typically have prickly, divided foliage and produce prominently-displayed pink, yellow or cream flowers followed by grey, conical fruits. Taxonomy The genus ''Petrophile'' was first formally described in 1809 by Joseph Knight in ''On the cultivation of the plants belonging to the natural order of Proteeae'', preempting publication of the same name by Robert Brown in his book '' On the natural order of plants called Proteaceae''. The name ''Petrophile'' is derived from the Greek words ''petra'' = rock and ''philos'' = seeking or preferring, referring to the rocky habitat in which some species grow. Margaret River
The Margaret River is a river in southwest Western Australia. In a small catchment, it is the eponym of the town and tourist region of Margaret River. The river arises from a catchment of just 40 square kilometres in the Whicher Range. The middle reaches pass through land cleared for agriculture, especially viticulture. There is a weir across the river just above the town. The mouth of the river is a small estuary, closed to the ocean by a sandbar that opens only seasonally. Margaret River is presumed to be named after Margaret Wyche, cousin of John Garrett Bussell (founder of Busselton) in 1832.
