"Where Are You Now" is a power ballad by the Pennsylvania-based 1980s band Synch. Co-written and sung by Synch band member Jimmy Harnen, the song was initially credited solely to Synch when it was first released in 1986. In 1989, the re-recorded version of the song was released under the name Jimmy Harnen with Synch, or solely to Jimmy Harnen in other territories. Background Synch was a band that formed in 1985, with Jimmy Harnen as the drummer. The other band members were lead vocalist Lou Butwin, guitarist Dave Abraham, bassist James A. Donnelly (who is currently a prominent figure in broadcasting and podsafe music movement), and keyboardist Chuck Yarmey. Although not the "official" lead vocalist for the group, Harnen was afforded the chance to sing lead on his own composition. Jimmy Harnen is an American singer, songwriter, drummer, and music industry executive. He had a top ten U.S. hit in 1989 with the power ballad " Where Are You Now" credited to Jimmy Harnen with Synch (). Biography Harnen was born and raised in Plymouth, a small town in northeast Pennsylvania. In high school, he played drums in the marching band. In 1985, he became the drummer for the local band Synch, made up of lead vocalist Lou Butwin, guitarist Dave Abraham, bass guitarist James A. Donnelly and keyboard player Chuck Yarmey. That year, the band recorded some of their songs, with Harnen singing on one song, " Where Are You Now". He had written the song with a friend named Rich Congdon, and the band decided to release it as a single on the independent label Micki Records, originally backed with the Butwin-sung B-side, "End the Game". Podsafe is a term created in the podcasting community to refer to any work which, through its licensing, specifically allows the use of the work in podcasting, regardless of restrictions the same work might have in other realms. For example, a song may be legal to use in podcasts, but may need to be purchased or have royalties paid for over-the-air radio use, television use, and possibly even personal use. Podsafe music gained modest popularity in the early days of podcasting, largely because of podcaster resources like the now-defunct Podsafe Music Network. Most podcasters were just hobbyists at that point. In the early 2010s, the podcast industry professionalized with the advent of podcast-oriented media companies such as Earwolf.
