When Romance Rides
''When Romance Rides'' is a 1922 American drama film directed by Eliot Howe, Charles O. Rush, and Jean Hersholt and written by Benjamin B. Hampton. It is based on the 1917 novel ''Wildfire'' by Zane Grey. The film stars Claire Adams, Carl Gantvoort, Jean Hersholt, Harry von Meter, Charles Arling, and Mary Jane Irving. The film was released on April 9, 1922, by Goldwyn Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine, Lucy Bostil (Adams) and her father (Arling) have staked everything on their horse winning a race. Bill Cordts (von Meter) and his henchman Joel Creech (Hersholt) try to kill all the favorite horses so that theirs will win. Joel is fired and swears revenge. Shortly before the race is to take place Lucy finds Lin Slone (Gantvoort) who has been somewhat hurt in an encounter with a wild horse he calls Wildfire. She takes him to the ranch. Eliot Howe
Eliot Callender Howe (1882-1921) was an American director of silent films. Biography Howe was born on December 23, 1882, in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Throop College (now California Institute of Technology) in Pasadena, California. On January 1, 1914, he married actress Janice Vincent, (born Alpha Omega Howe) in Venice, California. The couple had one son, Eliot E., born in 1921. Howe died of a heart attack on December 18, 1921, in Los Angeles, shortly after completing the film ''Wild Fire''. Audrey Chapman
Audrey Chapman (March 2, 1899 – August 10, 1993) was an actress in motion pictures of the silent film era from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A niece of Hampton Del Ruth and Roy Del Ruth, Chapman was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward a Bigley. She was educated in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, California. She went from a finishing school directly into movies. In ' (1920) she played the character of Mary Holmes in a photoplay written by Upton Sinclair. The setting is the "Oriental underworld" of New York City. Chapman dons twenty-two gowns in all, ranging from filmy negligee to elaborate fur-trimmed costumes. She was among the cast of ''Wildfire'' (1921), based on a Zane Grey novel. Two complete producing crews shot the movie, which was an outdoor narrative. The setting was the mythical Spanish state of ''Chinora''. An American mining engineer is drilling for oil there. Babe London (born Jean Glover, August 28, 1901 – November 29, 1980) was an American actress and comedian, most remembered for her one-time partnership with Oliver Hardy in the 1931 Laurel and Hardy two-reeler ''Our Wife''. Career London was born in 1901 in Des Moines, Iowa. Her parents were Dr. David James Glover and Ruth Glover. After the family moved to California, London attended San Diego High School. London began her screen career as a teenager making her film debut in ''The Expert Eloper'' in 1919. She then appeared in '' A Day's Pleasure'', performing opposite Charlie Chaplin. The two played seasick tourists on an excursion boat. She had the role of Rosy Leadbetter in ''Merely Mary Ann'' (1920). Frank Hayes (May 17, 1871 – December 28, 1923) was an American film actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 70 films between 1913 and 1924. An actor with a unique hatchet face appearance he appeared mostly in comedies. His facial appearance naturally lent to comedic effect in silent films — in particular when he would leave out his dentures — but he also showed up in sentimental farces such as ''A Hoosier Romance'' (1918), an early film starring Colleen Moore. In his last appearance, even though brief in the theatrical cut, he played "Old Grannis" in the tragedy ''Greed''. He died in Hollywood, California from pneumonia, aged 52.
