''When Knighthood Was in Flower'' is a play in four acts by Paul Kester. It is based on the 1898 novel of the same name by Charles Major. The work premiered on Broadway at the Criterion Theatre on January 14, 1901. Mary Tudor (; 18 March 1496 – 25 June 1533) was an English princess who was briefly Queen of France as the third wife of King Louis XII. Louis was more than 30 years her senior. Mary was the fifth child of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York, and the youngest to survive infancy. Following Louis's death, Mary married Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk. Performed secretly in France, the marriage occurred without the consent of Mary's brother Henry VIII. The Empire Theatre in New York City was a prominent Broadway theatre in the first half of the twentieth century. History The Empire Theatre opened in 1893 with a performance of ''The Girl I Left Behind Me'' by David Belasco. In February 1927 actress Gail Kane and others were arrested following a performance of '' The Captive'', which was considered indecent and a violation of Section 1140A of the New York City Criminal Code. The Empire continued to present both original plays and revivals, including the English premiere of ''The Threepenny Opera'' in 1933, until 1953. Its final show, ''The Time of the Cuckoo'', closed May 30, 1953 after 263 performances. In the same month, the theatre hosted a benefit celebrating the sixty-year history of the Empire. Ken Bloom is a New York-based, Grammy Award-winning theatre historian, playwright, director, record producer, and author. He began his theatre career in the mid-'70s at the New Playwrights Theatre of Washington. Along with some friends, Bloom co-founded the ASTA theatre. That company became the basis for New Playwrights. While at ASTA, Bloom joined the Smithsonian Puppet Theater, performing as part of Allan Stevens and Company in Washington and on tour throughout the United States for over two years. Julia Marlowe (born Sarah Frances Frost; August 17, 1865 – November 12, 1950) was an English-born American actress, known for her interpretations of William Shakespeare's plays. Life and career Marlowe was born as Sarah Frances Frost at Caldbeck, Cumberland, England, to clogger and shoemaker John Frost and Sarah (Strong) Hodgson. When she was four her family emigrated to the United States.
