Wheeless, Oklahoma
Wheeless is an unincorporated community in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, United States. The post office was established February 12, 1907, and discontinued September 27, 1963. Nearby are the ruins of Camp Nichols, a military encampment on the Santa Fe Trail, which is a National Historic Landmark. Wheeless is on E0200Rd; the New Mexico border is approximately six miles west. The closest highway access points are east and then north to Oklahoma State Highway 325 at the curve where that road turns north after running west from Boise City, or west and then south to the very short New Mexico State Road 410, which links to New Mexico State Road 406, about two miles to the west. Texhomex
Texhomex is a marker showing the tri-point of Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. The marker is off U.S. Highway 56 about two miles east on Texas State Line Road at the corner of Oklahoma State Line Road, and is at an elevation of 4712 feet. There are no signs on Highway 56 in either direction. The tri-state marker is in a pasture and can be accessed by walking over a cattle guard. Other Nearby Geographic Points The Northwest corner of the Texas panhandle is located 2.2 miles west of this point, which was due to originally a surveying error in 1859. The joint congressional resolution in 1911 declared the line surveyed by Clark to be the actual boundary line between Texas and New Mexico. The Northwest corner of the Texas panhandle had been previously marked but the marker was either removed or buried when the highway was widened in 2016. New Mexico State Road 406
State Road 406 (NM 406) is a state highway in Union County, New Mexico, United States. NM 406's southern terminus is at U.S. Route 56/ 64/412 near Clayton, and the northern terminus is at NM 456 near the Oklahoma border. The route stays entirely within Union County. Route description SR 406 begins at an intersection with US 56, US 64, and US 412 in a concurrency. The road then heads north, passing by a few farms. At an intersection with County Route A055, the route turns right toward the Oklahoma border. The road zigzags north and east again to an intersection with SR 410, which heads east toward Wheeless, Oklahoma. At SR 410, SR 406 again turns back north and hugs the Oklahoma border. State Highway 325, officially, SH-325, is a state highway in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. SH-325 runs for through Cimarron County, Oklahoma, from a continuation of New Mexico State Road 456 at the New Mexico border west of Kenton to the traffic circle in Boise City. Along the way it provides access to Black Mesa State Park, near Black Mesa, the highest point in the state of Oklahoma. Santa Fe Trail
The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th-century route through central North America that connected Franklin, Missouri, with Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pioneered in 1821 by William Becknell, who departed from the Boonslick region along the Missouri River, the trail served as a vital commercial highway until 1880, when the railroad arrived in Santa Fe. Santa Fe was near the end of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro which carried trade from Mexico City. The trail was later incorporated into parts of the National Old Trails Road and U.S. Route 66. The route skirted the northern edge and crossed the north-western corner of Comancheria, the territory of the Comanche. Realizing the value, they demanded compensation for granting passage to the trail. American traders envisioned them as another market.
