Wheelchair Rugby At The 2008 Summer Paralympics
Wheelchair rugby at the 2008 Summer Paralympics was held in the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium from 12 September to 16 September. Medalists Classification Wheelchair rugby players were given a classification based on their upper body function. A committee gave each athlete a 7-level score ranging from 0.5 to 3.5, with lower scores corresponding to more severe disability. During the game, the total score of all players on the court for a team cannot exceed 8 points. However, for each female player on court, their team gets an extra 0.5 points over the 8 point limit. Teams Eight teams took part in this sport. Each team could have up to 12 athletes, but no more than 11 of the team members could be male. The Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium () is an indoor arena located on the campus of the University of Science and Technology Beijing. The venue covers an area of 2.38 hectares and the total floor space of construction reaches 24,662 square metres. The seating capacity is 8,024 seats, including 3,956 temporary ones. Brad Dubberley (born 28 June 1981) is an Australian Paralympic wheelchair rugby Head Coach and former athlete. He won a silver medal as an athlete at the 2000 Summer Paralympics, 2000 Sydney Games and as the head coach at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, 2008 Beijing Games in the mixed wheelchair rugby event. Scott Vitale (born 6 July 1985) was a member of the Australian wheelchair rugby team which competed in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Paralympics. Scott Vitale was born to Jill and Phillip Vitale on 6 July 1985, in Queensland, Australia. He was involved in a motorbike accident in September 2001. Scott began to play wheelchair rugby in 2002. A year later he was a member of the Australian National team. His wheelchair rugby career has also included such highlights as winning the Asia-Oceania Zonal Championships. Greg Smith (Paralympian)
Gregory Stephen Smith, OAM (born 19 August 1967) is an Australian Paralympic athlete and wheelchair rugby player who won three gold medals in athletics at the 2000 Summer Paralympics, and a gold medal in wheelchair rugby at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, where he was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Personal Smith was born on 19 August 1967 in the Victorian city of Ballarat. He broke his neck in a car accident in 1987 while he was a physical training instructor with the Australian Army. Ryan Scott, (born 3 March 1982) is a Paralympic wheelchair rugby competitor from Australia. In four Paralympics, Scott has won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, 2008 Beijing Paralympics and gold medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, 2012 London and 2016 Summer Paralympics, 2016 Rio Paralympics. Nazim Erdem
Nazim Erdem, (born 1 August 1970) is an Australian wheelchair rugby Paralympic gold and silver medalist. He has won two gold and two silver medals at five Paralympics from 2000 to 2016. Personal Nazim Erdem was born on 1 August 1970 in the Turkish city of Kayseri and later immigrated to Australia with his family. He became a quadriplegic at the age of 20 after diving off a pier into shallow water in an effort to impress some watching girls. As a youngster, he practiced holding his breath and could hold it for up to three minutes. His ability to hold his breath for a long period of time saved his life as he was under water for two-and-a-half minutes before he was rescued.
