''Upstairs, Downstairs'' is a British television drama series produced by London Weekend Television (LWT) for ITV. It ran for 68 episodes divided into five series on ITV from 1971 to 1975. Set in a large townhouse at 165, Eaton Place in Belgravia in central London, the series depicts the servants—"downstairs"—and their masters, the family—"upstairs"—between the years 1903 and 1930, and shows the slow decline of the British aristocracy. Great events feature prominently in each episode but minor or gradual changes are also noted. The show may be regarded as a document of the social and technological changes that occurred during those 27 years, including the Edwardian period, women's suffrage, the First World War, the Roaring Twenties, and the Wall Street Crash. Christopher Hodson (director)
Christopher John Hodson is a New Zealand barrister and judge, Judge Advocate General of the New Zealand Armed Forces, and the Chief Judge of the Court Martial of New Zealand. Early life Hodson was born in Masterton, where he grew up on his family's hill country farm. He graduated from the Victoria University of Wellington in 1966 with an LLB degree. Career Hodson was admitted to the Bar in 1966, and from 1966–82, was a Partner in Major Gooding & Partners in Masterton. In 1983, Hodson became a partner in Macalister Mazengarb Parkin & Rose in Wellington, before commencing practice as a barrister sole in 1991, where he specialised in medical and military law. "A Perfect Stranger" is the tenth episode of the third series of the British television series, ''Upstairs, Downstairs''. The episode is set in 1914. Cast Guest cast * Gregory Wilmot ( Keith Barron) Plot Rose has become engaged to Gregory Walter Wilmot, a British sheep farmer living in Australia, who professes socialist views. They first meet on a tram in April 1914 when he accidentally sits on a plum cake she is carrying. They soon start courting. Gregory proposes on 12 April 1914 and gives Rose an engagement ring. Gregory takes Rose to visit his friends. There, a childhood friend (and former love interest) of Gregory's becomes jealous and sneeringly declares that Gregory would be marrying below himself should he wed Rose. His other friends are more supportive, and encourage her to marry him. Bernard Archard
Bernard Joseph Archard (20 August 1916 – 1 May 2008) was an English actor who made many film and television appearances. Early life and career Archard was born in Fulham, London, where his father Alfred James Aloysius who was born in Marylebone was a jeweller. Bernard's paternal grandfather Alfred Charles Archard and great grandfather Henry Archard were clockmakers, watchmakers and jewellers in Mayfair, London during the 1800s. He was the maternal grandson of James Matthew Littleboy, Mayor of Fulham, 1906–07. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and in summer 1939 he appeared in the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, London, production of ''Twelfth Night''. As a conscientious objector during the Second World War, he worked on Quaker land. Television Archard's first major television role, reprising the like-titled radio show, was playing Lt Col. Anthony Ainley
Anthony Ainley (20 August 1932 – 3 May 2004) was an English actor. He was the fourth actor to portray The Master (Doctor Who), the Master in ''Doctor Who''. Early life Ainley was born in Stanmore, Middlesex, the son of the actor Henry Ainley, on 20 August 1932, although his birth was not registered until January 1938 at around the time that he was admitted to the actors' orphanage. The birth certificates of Anthony and his brother Timothy identify their mother as Clarice Holmes and it is under this surname that they are recorded in the Official Register. Although no father is named on the birth certificates, Timothy's marriage certificate identifies Henry Ainley as his father. He was educated at Bradfield College in Bradfield, near Reading in Berkshire, England.
