What A Man (1930 Film)
''What a Man'' is a 1930 American pre-Code romantic comedy film directed by George Crone and starring Reginald Denny, Miriam Seegar and Harvey Clark. It was an adaptation of the play ''They All Want Something'' by Courtenay Savage, which was itself based on a novel by E.J. Rath. A separate Spanish language version ''Thus Is Life'' was made at the same time. The film was remade in 1938 as ''Merrily We Live''. It is also known by the alternative title ''The Gentleman Chauffeur''. Premise A British ex-Grenadier Guards officer moves to America, but struggles to find work. After he is employed as a chauffeur to a wealthy family, he falls in love with his employer's daughter. George Crone
George Crone (1894–1966), also known as George J. Crone, was an American director and editor, whose career spanned both the silent and sound film eras. He began his career cutting the silent film '' Let's Be Fashionable'' in 1920. Between that film and his final screen credit, editing '' Arruza'' (released in 1972), he edited over 40 films, and directed over a dozen more. ''Arruza'' was released 6 years after Crone's death. Crone had worked with director Budd Boetticher, on Boetticher's obsession, a docudrama regarding his friend Carlos Arruza, the famous bullfighter. Boetticher had used ten cameras to film 2 of Arruza's bullfights in January and February 1966, and Crone was tasked with editing the different fights together. Crone died shortly after completing the tasks, in June 1966. Earlier in his career, he had been the original editor on '' Citizen Kane'', before being replaced by Robert Wise. Greta Granstedt (born Irene Louise Granstedt; July 13, 1907 – October 7, 1987) was an American film and television actress. Early life Irene "Greta" Granstedt was the second child of Theodore and Emma Granstedt, born in Scandia, Kansas. The Granstedt family was one of the five pioneer families from Sweden who settled in this north central Kansas community in 1867-68. The families left Sweden in response to the terrible conditions in the three years of misery in Sweden. Shooting of Harold Galloway Granstedt first gained notoriety and widespread media attention in April 1922 after she shot her 17-year-old boyfriend, Harold Galloway, with a pistol she borrowed from a friend.
