Laarne () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of and Laarne proper. On 1 January 2018, Laarne had a total population of 12,487. The total area is 32.07 km². The current mayor of Laarne is Ignace De Baerdemaecker, from the VLD (Liberal) party. History The village lies to the east of Ghent, near a former course of the River the Scheldt and is notable for its castle. The castle dates from the twelfth and later centuries, notably, the seventeenth, and has been sympathetically restored and re-furnished. The name arises from the Germanic ''hlaeri'' which signifies terrain seen as wooded and marshy. It is possible to speculate that the village originated in serving the castle, which in turn, guarded the river approach to Ghent from the sea. Melle () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the villages of and Melle proper. On 1 January 2018 Melle had a total population of 11,574. The total area is 15.21 km² which gives a population density of 761 inhabitants per km². Melle was mentioned in documents in 830, although the archeological findings prove the region was inhabited long before that date. The name Melle has two possible derivations: the Celtic word ''melina'' means "brown water"; the prehistoric name ''Melinos'' means "honey yellow". The village of Melle consists of three regions: Melle-Centre, Melle-Vogelhoek and Gontrode (since the fusion in 1976). Cecile Bombeek
Cecile Bombeek (1933-2019) was a Order of Saint Joseph nun and Belgian serial killer who killed three people between 1976 to 1977. She died in 2019 at St. Jozef, Wetteren. She was 86 years old. Background and Crimes Cecile Bombeek was born in the small Belgian village of Overmere. At fifteen, she expressed a desire to become a nun and entered the Apostolic Congregation of Holy Joseph in nearby Wetteren. She lived in its cloister and spent much of her subsequent life to work within the town's Old People's Home. She was now Sister Godfrida and soon gained a reputation for piety, hard work and leadership. Years passed. Sister Godfrida rose in the ranks of the order until she was appointed Mother Superior. She represented her order for many years within the hospital and wider community. In the mid-seventies, she served as geriatrics manager within a Belgian public hospital in Flemish Wetteren.
