Wetherby Gymnasium
The Wetherby Gymnasium is a 4,000-seat multi-purpose arena at Morehead State University (MSU) in Morehead, Kentucky. It is named for former Governor of Kentucky, Kentucky Governor Lawrence Wetherby and was built in 1956. The facility was slated for demolition in 2024. Wetherby Gymnasium was the home of MSU's Eagles volleyball teams until they moved to Ellis Johnson Arena in 2018. Prior to the Ellis Johnson Arena opening in 1981, it also hosted the MSU basketball team. Lawrence Wetherby
Lawrence Winchester Wetherby (January 2, 1908 – March 27, 1994) was an American politician who served as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Kentucky. He was the first of only two governors in state history born in Jefferson County, despite the fact that Louisville (the county seat) is the state's most populous city. The second governor born in Jefferson County is the incumbent governor, Andy Beshear. After graduating from the University of Louisville, Wetherby held several minor offices in the Jefferson County judicial system before being elected lieutenant governor in 1947. He was called Kentucky's first "working" lieutenant governor because Governor Earle C. Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. Ellis Johnson Arena
Ellis T. Johnson Arena is a 6,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Morehead, Kentucky, United States. Located in the Academic-Athletic Center on the campus of Morehead State University, it is the home to the Morehead State Eagles men's and women's basketball teams. Construction began in 1978, and the building opened in 1981. The Eagles won their inaugural game in the building on Dec. 3, 1981, over the University of Charleston. Johnson Arena can be easily transformed into an auditorium for concerts and commencements. At the east end of the playing floor, a hydraulic stage can be raised for events. Johnson Arena largely replaced Wetherby Gymnasium which continues to house the Eagles volleyball team.
