Westridge, Isle Of Wight
Westridge is an area on the edge of Ryde on the Isle of Wight, based on the road junction of Westridge Cross. Its location on the outskirts of the largest town on the Island, around miles from Ryde town centre, has led to the development of a number of out-of-town commercial and industrial units. A large Tesco Extra store in the area on the site of the former Ryde Airport. A garden centre has been developed opposite the Tesco Store and a golf centre to the other side. There is a long-established garage at Westridge Cross and another adjacent to the site of the former airport terminal building. Public transport is provided by Southern Vectis buses on route 3. Ryde
Ryde is an English seaside town and civil parish on the north-east coast of the Isle of Wight. The built-up area had a population of 23,999 according to the 2011 Census and an estimate of 24,847 in 2019. Its growth as a seaside resort came after the villages of Upper Ryde and Lower Ryde were merged in the 19th century, as can still be seen in the town's central and seafront architecture. The resort's expansive sands are revealed at low tide. Their width means the regular ferry service to the mainland requires a long listed pier – the fourth longest in the United Kingdom, and the oldest surviving. History In 1782 numerous bodies of men, women and children from HMS ''Royal George'', which sank suddenly at Spithead, were washed ashore at Ryde. Southern Vectis
Southern Vectis is a bus operator on the Isle of Wight. The company was founded in 1921 as "Dodson and Campbell" and became the "Vectis Bus Company" in 1923. The company was purchased by the Southern Railway (Great Britain), Southern Railway before being nationalised in 1969. In 1987, the company was re-privatised. Wightbus
Wightbus was a bus operator on the Isle of Wight, established and owned by the Isle of Wight County Council. It operated a network of thirteen local bus services running across the island, mostly services which would not have been viable for the island's dominant commercial operator, Southern Vectis, to operate. Wightbus also provided school buses, and transported disabled adults to various day care centres on behalf of the council's social services department. A dial-a-bus service was run over some parts of the island to residents who would be unable to leave their homes to catch a regular service bus. The Wightbus fleet was made up of 27 vehicles with capacities ranging from 16 to 72. Around 40 trained drivers and passenger-escort staff were employed. Over 1 million passengers travelled on Wightbus services annually. Wightbus was axed by the new unitary Isle of Wight Council in February 2011, with the last services operating on 2 September 2011.
