Westpac Outstanding Women Award
The Westpac Outstanding Women Award (shortened to WOW Award) recognizes exceptional professional work of women in Papua New Guinea. Since its inception in 2006, when it was called the Westpac Women in Business Award, the Award has recognized the achievements of individual women in multiple categories. Each category awardee then becomes a finalist for the overall WOW Award. In the face of acknowledged gender inequity in the country, the WOW Awards call attention to the crucial and highly skilled work done by women across a number of sectors. The winner of the WOW Award receives a grant to pursue a formal education, professional mentoring, opportunities for professional learning and networking at an Australian Executive Women's Leadership symposium, and a cash prize. The WOW Awards support the belief that investment in women leads to stronger economic outcomes for a nation as a whole, and strives to provide role models for the girls and women of the country. Women's Rights In Papua New Guinea
Examples of Gender inequality Papua New Guinea includes poverty, violence, limited access to education and health care, and witch hunts. Cases of violence against women in PNG are under reported. There is also a lack of services for women who experience violence. There are reports of sexual abuse by police officers, on arrest and whilst in police custody. These incidents lack documentation or investigation, consequently, perpetrators are rarely prosecuted or punished. The government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has introduced legislation to combat these issues, though with limited success. Many traditional cultural practices are followed in PNG. These include polygamy, bride price, and the stereotypical roles assigned to both men and women. These cultural practices reflect deep-rooted patriarchal attitudes which reinforce the unequal status of women in many areas. Joyce Kiage
Joyce Kiage is a businesswoman from Papua New Guinea. In 2015 she won the Westpac Outstanding Women Entrepreneur Award. The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation organization also recognized her as the First PGN Iconic Women winner in 2015. Margaret Aka
Margaret Aka (born 1976) is a soccer player and coach from Papua New Guinea. She is the first woman in Papua New Guinea — and the first in the world outside of New Zealand — to receive an Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) B License in coaching. The first woman in Papua New Guinea to coach a male league team, she is also only the third to do so worldwide. Early years Aka is from the village of Guhi, in Kimbe, West New Britain Province. Raylance Mesa
In 2019, at the age of 24, Raylance Mesa was the youngest winner of the Westpac Outstanding Woman Award (WOW) in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for her work to help her island to adapt to climate change. Early life Raylance Mesa comes from the Tami Islands, which are off Finschhafen on the Huon Peninsula in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. She attained a bachelor's degree with merit in Architecture at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech), in PNG's second city of Lae, between 2014 and 2018. The island that Mesa comes from is sinking as a result of climate change, with differences in sea levels clearly noticeable. She started to work with her community to make changes at the age of 16. Cybele Druma
Cybele Druma is a rugby player and women's sports activist in Papua New Guinea. She is responsible for introducing women's rugby to the country, fighting deep societal resistance to women in sports. Druma was head of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union, the national rugby organization; she is one of the only females in the world to have presided over a national rugby federation. She is also president of the new Papua New Guinea Women Rugby Union Board a role to which she was elected for consecutive terms in 2007 and 2009. Crystal Kewe is a web and app developer based in Papua New Guinea and the CEO and CTO of Crysan Technology Ltd. Early life and education Kewe's interest in programming started with an interest in video gaming, and around age 12, she started teaching herself to program software writing in python. She attended Paradise High School in Papua New Guinea up until grade 10, in 2014, after which she stopped going to school and continued pursuing a self-created education in programming. Ruth Kissam
Ruth Kissam is a community organizer and a human rights activist who has focused on Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SRV) in Papua New Guinea. She was awarded the Westpac Outstanding Woman (WOW) Award in Papua New Guinea in 2018. Early life Ruth Jewels Kissam was born in Enga Province. Her father worked as an interpreter for missionaries, which required him and his family to frequently relocate to different villages. Rita Jaima Paru is a Papua New Guinean food entrepreneur, who previously ran the company Dial-a-Lunch. Career Rita Jaima Paru was born in Papua New Guinea where she went to Marianville High School. She attended the Papua New Guinea University of Technology in 1997, but dropped out following the birth of her daughter. Evelyn Lavu
Evelyn Lavu (died August 2021) was the most senior pathologist in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and a recognised leader in the fight against HIV, malaria and drug-resistant tuberculosis. She was Director of the Central Public Health Laboratory in Papua New Guinea for over a decade and, in June 2021, became PNG's first and only female Professor of Medicine.
