Westmont High School (Westmont, Illinois)
Westmont High School, or WHS, is a public four-year high school located in Westmont, a western suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of Westmont Community Unit School District 201. The student population of 450 students and building size are much smaller than adjacent public high schools such as Downers Grove North and Hinsdale Central. History The school was created as part of the newly formed CUSD 201 in Westmont in 1972, and first opened for education in September 1974. The community approved building the new high school in 1973, and the current Westmont High School building opened in October 1976. The school mascot, the Sentinel, is a sentry, or guard wearing a uniform of the school colors, burgundy and gold. The name was chosen via submissions to the school board. Westmont is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. Westmont is a community of 5.03 square miles in area with a 2010 population of 24,685. It is located approximately west of the Chicago Loop in the southeastern portion of DuPage County. History The area known as Westmont was inhabited by the Potawatami until the year 1833. After several failed attempts by the U.S. government to persuade the Native Americans to move from the area, in 1833, the Native Americans agreed under coercion to vacate their land for nominal payment. The development of the Illinois-Michigan Canal, authorized by the State of Illinois in the 1820s but delayed in construction until the 1830s, contributed to Westmont's early growth. Reggie Benjamin
Reggie Benjamin is a Canadian pop singer. Early life and career Benjamin was born in Canada to parents that had recently immigrated from India. At the age of nine his parents moved to the US and his childhood and youth was spent in Chicago. His father was a Christian preacher, who raised Benjamin on Elvis Presley's gospel music. He graduated from Chicago's Columbia College with a degrees in Music Voice and the city's College du Page with a degree in Business Communications, both in 1997. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) was a U.S. Act of Congress that reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act; it included Title I provisions applying to disadvantaged students.
