Westland Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in West Burlington, Iowa. Opened in 1977, the mall's anchor stores are Westland Theatre, and Marshalls. There are 2 vacant anchor stores that were once JCPenney and Younkers. It is owned by Kohan Retail Investment Group. History General Growth Properties began building Westland Mall in 1976. Original tenants included JCPenney, Younkers, Woolworth, Kirlin's Hallmark, County Seat, Karmelkorn, Bresler's Ice Cream, and Osco Drug. The mall opened for business on March 30, 1977, comprising more than 40 stores. In 1981, Woolworth converted the store to its Woolco division, before closing it in 1983. Bresler's Ice Cream
Bresler's 33 Flavors was an American ice cream chain founded in 1927. Its founder was Polish immigrant William J. Bresler, who died in 1985. In 1954, Bresler's began a fast food hamburger chain called Henry's Hamburgers. The Bresler's chain was sold in 1987 to Oberweis Dairy in Aurora, Illinois. Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio, by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was a full-line discount department store unlike the five-and-dime Woolworth stores which operated at the time. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. While the American stores were closed in 1983, the chain remained active in Canada until it was sold in 1994 to rival Walmart, which was looking to enter the Canadian market. Osco Drug and Sav-on Drugs were the names of a pair of chain pharmacies that operated in the United States. Osco Drug was founded by the Skaggs family. Alpha Beta grocery store was purchased by American Stores in 1961. Skaggs Drug Centers bought American Stores in 1979 and assumed the American Stores name. Sav-on Drugs was a California-based pharmacy chain that was acquired by Osco's parent company in 1980. Both Osco and Sav-on stores eventually came under the ownership of American Stores, then Albertsons, and finally SuperValu before the stores were sold off. Karmelkorn was an American popcorn retailer. It was founded in 1928 in Casper, Wyoming, by Mr. and Mrs. William O'Sullivan. The O'Sullivans patented their candy-coated popcorn and trademarked the product's name and logo in 1929. Initially, they licensed the product to existing confectioneries before creating a chain of franchised Karmelkorn stores. County Seat was an American clothing retailer founded in 1973. With more than 740 stores at its peak, the chain closed in 1999 following Chapter 11 bankruptcy. History Jack J.
