Western Port Province
Western Port Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council. It was created in 2002 as a replacement for the abolished South Eastern Province. It was intended to be a two-member electorate, but it was abolished in 2006 as part of the Bracks Labor government's reform of the Legislative Council, before the second member was due to be elected. The electorate would have normally been expected to be reasonably safe for the Liberal Party, but it was narrowly won by the Labor Party in their landslide victory at the 2002 state election. It was located in the south-east of the state. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Cameron Boardman
Blair Cameron Boardman (born 10 December 1970) is the previous CEO of .au Domain Administration, is a former Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1996 to 2002, representing Chelsea Province. Boardman was born in Melbourne to parents Peter and Valerie, and studied at Wesley College (1978–83), Haileybury College (1984–88), and the Victoria Police Academy (1989). He became a constable in the Victorian Police Force in 1989, serving until his move to politics in 1996. He undertook officer training in the Australian Army Reserve at Watsonia (1993–95) before completing his training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1996. Geoff Hilton
John Geoffrey Hilton (born 13 October 1947) is an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council from 2002 to 2006, representing Western Port Province. Hilton was born in St. Helens in the United Kingdom, and studied at the University of Aberdeen and Hull University. He was employed as an accountant after graduating, but moved into consultancy in the late 1970s, first as a management consultant, and then moving to executive recruitment. In 2002, Hilton won Labor preselection to contest the new seat of Western Port Province. The seat had replaced the generally safe Liberal seat of South Eastern Province, and been made safer for the Liberal Party in the ensuing redistribution. 2002 Victorian State Election
The 2002 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 30 November 2002, was for the 55th Parliament of Victoria. It was held to elect the 88 members of Victorian Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The Labor government led by Premier Steve Bracks was returned for a second term with a landslide, taking 62 seats, a gain of 20. It was easily the biggest majority that Labor had ever won in Victoria, and one of Labor's best-ever performances at the state level in Australia. Additionally, it was only the third time that a Labor government had been reelected in Victoria. Wonthaggi is a seaside town located south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Sorrento is a coastal town on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area.
